The spirit of Phidippides carries on in Baltimore City. In anticipation of the 24th Athens Classic Marathon, training has begun in Baltimore, Maryland in earnest. Veteran runner Charles Edwards II and rookie Spiro Antoniades have thrown their hats into the ring.
The Athens Classic Marathon will take place on Sunday November 5th, 2006 at 8:30am. The course traces the original path Phidippides ran in 490 B.C. after he fought in the Battle of Marathon for the Athenian army against the Persian attack. Go to www.athensclassicmarathon.gr for more details. His last words to the king on reaching the palace were "We won".
The marathon race originated in 1896 in the first Olympiad and the first winner was Spyros Louis. Las Vegas bookies give Spiro Antoniades the same odds of continuing the winning tradition of a Spiro winning the race as the universe imploding on itself. Nevertheless, the race will be run.
The current plan is for the Antoniades and Edwards family to accompany the participants to Greece. Our plan is to fly directly into Crete on Thursday October 26th and stay in Crete for a week of relaxation on the beach. We plan on traveling back to Athens on the Friday prior to the race to visit Athens and coming home the day after the marathon.
Details will follow.
All comers are welcome to join us in this event and please post any comments or relative articles.
