Queen of the Night.

One of my neighbors works for the Eudora Welty Foundation. Ms. Welty's house is a national landmark. Tonight my neighbor called me over to see her Night-blooming cereus. A sight she has only seen once before from this plant. She told me this story.... "Mrs. Welty's mom and friends would put an ad in the paper when it was time for the Cereus to bloom. As southerners do, they would have a party each night , taking turns going to one others house to smell the beautiful scent. Of course, this ...

It's a Dirty Job But ... ..

The guys started work on the back yard today. This was the view of our back yard, taken from the back deck, yesterday. This is after they knocked down the trees this morning. After the concrete wall, that was embedded in our lawn, was removed the gas man straightened our gas line. Current view of our back yard. I don't know when they are coming back. The contractor told me our fence should be delivered sometime this week but he's not sure when it will go up. The good news: We only have to ...

Uncluttering - a Fall Cleaning Project, Part 4

Dealing with the Dilemma of Inherited Items and Mementos (Your home is NOT a museum!) Many people think that you're obligated to keep something that was handed down, even if nobody likes the darn thing. Maybe somebody else didn't like it so they just passed it down (handed it over) to you just to unload it. Things do not have to become yours just because they belonged to a relative. You're not living that person's life, you may have different tastes, you may not have the room. So, unless y ...

First Frost = Sept.2

I covered all the tomatoes, zucchini and squash plants last night. While the city didn't freeze, my acreage did. The green beans are probably dead, and interestingly, on the plants that I did cover, the leaves touching the blankets also died. I checked the frost dates for my area. Last frost: May 23. First frost: Sept 15. So this frost is nearly 2 weeks early. Oh, and a few days ago it snowed only 100km from me.

Uncluttering - a Fall Cleaning Project, Part 3

What To Do About New Things That Have Never Been Used First of all, do you buy things just because they're on sale? If you don't need them, then they're not a bargain. So, ask yourself three questions before you buy anything: 1. Where will this item live? If you're serious about de-cluttering, then you are designating that all things have their proper place, or home. So, where will this "can't resist" item live, or fit? 2. What am I going to do with this thing? If you are actually going to ...

The Mysterious Cat

I come from a cat loving family. A house is never a home until a cat joins the household. They lend dignity and warmth and grace us with their beauty. I have been reading a book about cats, "The Secret Life of Cats", written by Robert Laroche and Jean Labat. They trace cats back to 6700 B. C. where cat remains were found in Jericho. We are all familar with the cat Goddess, Bastet that the Egyptians worshiped. In 945 A.D Howard the Good, a Welsh King passed laws safe guarding cats and I am ...

You Can Smell the Difference!

It hasn't been often that we can eat all our own home grown vegtables at the same time of harvesting. Today we are, we're having a lamb dnner for super, with our own home grown potatoes, peas, green beans, baby carrots and parsnips. As it cooks it smells devine, there's nothing like it, you can really smell the difference, and I already know how great they taste. You can't buy this in a shop, I don't care what anyone says. Freshly picked and in the pan with 20 mins and in my belly in half ...

I try not to dispense too much advice, especially in areas that are not my expertise. So when it comes to home building projects I consult with TV handyman Red Green. Red had these helpful tips on what to do with old appliances, maybe they will give you some ideas.

Uncluttering - a Fall Cleaning Project, Part 2

Well, it's time to actually start tackling the chore at hand...uncluttering. I'm going to borrow from Mr. Mellen's advice as I offer these suggestions for uncluttering a kitchen. This is usually a good room to start with because there's normally so much to be done! UNCLUTTERING THE KITCHEN Your kitchen is a food preparation area, not a storage space! Weed out what you don't use. Then, put everything else away, but be sure to group like items together and put each group away in it's own pla ...

Uncluttering - a Fall Cleaning Project

I know everyone doesn't subscribe to the idea of fall cleaning, but I am one of those people who always feels that I must do SOMETHING that will "count" as a fall cleaning accomplishment. Because I have been complaining so much about how overly cluttered and crowded things are in my apartment (the car, too!) and how messy that makes everything look, I think some serious uncluttering might be the thing I want to do for this year's major fall cleaning project. So, guess what I came across? A ...

Hi Everybody! We can't come home yet, but we are not going back to Nowhere. We are staying at the boarding house next to the grocery store. There's not much here, but it's better than Nowhere. We can walk in the morning. It isn't as good as home, but it's MUCH better than Nowhere. We walk with someone else at the boarding house that has a doggie. He is a nice doggie, but not like my friends there. After being at Nowhere, my Owner says that she's thinking of buying me my own computer!! That ...

Lost Iron Survey

I have looked everywhere in the house, closets, and garage -- except for three boxes way up on top of some garage cabinets -- and cannot find my clothes iron. I don't know what to do, so I'm turning the question over to Greasytown residents. Should I A. Ask for help getting those three boxes down, go through them, and ask for help putting them away again? B. Buy a new iron at Wal-mart? C. Take this as a sign from my Higher Power that I am meant never to touch an iron again for the remainde ...

Looks like Mary ( Elkhound) is going to have lots of room for her blogster friends to visit. I was hoping we could all post some ideas for fall to get Mary started. (Please leave a spot for an American flag to go somewhere on the table as the Buggs will have her "kitchen meetings" at Mary's when we in that part of the country)

The Power of Prayer

I have had many dear friends praying for me and my family in this difficult situation of losing our home. And I have to tell you the prayers and good thoughts have paid off. Today was the best day we have had in a very long time. We feel like the dark cloud has passed, the weight of the world is off our shoulders. You see, today I got my dream house. Hubby had put in calls to different people he knows, explaining our situation and to keep an eye out for something we could rent. One of his ...

Garden Musings

The kids and I dug up a potato plant today for supper, and discovered that I have potato fruit! They are poisonous, but kind of cool. I'll have to save the seeds from them, and see what kind of potatoes they grow. I pressured canned my first batch of green and yellow wax beans tonight. 7 pints. That's how many my tiny All American 910 canner can hold. I'll do at least another load or two. I really like green beans, so I plant a lot of them! Did you know that butterflies lay eggs? And those ...

From Nowhere

Hi Everybody! I am at Nowhere. It is not happy here. We are all sad. We don't have a walk in the morning because there's no place to walk. We had a long talk about coming home. I think we might be coming home, but we have to wait until the people who are staying in the home find another place to live. They said it might take a little while. So until we can get the house back, we are still at Nowhere. Here is the road to Nowhere. Here is a man we passed on the way to Nowhere. And here is th ...

I like Weeds!

How could anyone possibly think of this gorgeous flower as a noxious weed? Well, most people do, especially people with lawns. This is the dreaded dandelion. I've watched dandelions come up every spring all around me and I love the color. Of course, now that I've put down sod and am attempting to have a small lawn, perhaps next spring, or the spring afterward, I'll change my tune. All around me, indigenous plants come up throughout the spring and into the summer, flowering beautifully, yet ...
