A vicar was asked to dinner by one of his parishoners, who he knew to be an unkempt housekeeper.

When he sat down at the table, he noticed that the dishes were the dirtiest he had ever seen in his life.

"Were these dishes ever washed?" he asked his hostess, running his fingers over the dirt and grime.

She replied, "They're as clean as soap and water could get them."

He felt a tad apprehensive, but 'said grace' and began to eat. It really was delicious and he told her so (despite the dirty crockery).

When dinner was over and the hostess cleared the table, she took the dishes outside and yelled to her dogs: "Here Soap! Here Water!" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

When my mother was a new bride she and her mother-in-law, who was the minister's wife, went to visit an old native man who had been ill. He offered them tea and biscuits on a plate. Then, when the cups and plate were empty, the old man set the dishes on the floor and his dog licked them clean. My mother was horrified to see him put the still damp with dog slobber dishes back in the cupboard.
