Hobbies & Games > 'Rhydygwin'

  'Rhydygwin'

This is the name of the house my great grandfather (built ?) in Clydach.

Roughly, translated it means:

Ford (of) the wine.

He had decided to name it so, after a house he had known in his youth (apparently). My sister and I searched 'far and wide', to locate any evidence of this mysterious domicile which had captured this reminiscence of his but, to no avail.

I was doing some research earlier and, as I do, began to let my thoughts wander (still hovering, around the subject I had been imersed in) but venturing along a different, tangent.

This 'tangent', jogged my memory into wondering if, the location of this house name, could hold any evidence of its whereabouts . . .

I was sort of, lucky - I found a description of the mental anguish a 'T. Thomas' had been enduring while changing his faith to Unitarianism, he left this quote (which I believe to be in 'Yr Morfynydd', a Unitarian pamphlet of 1897 pages 284-8). He says:

"Undodiaeth yn Ystrad a Rhydygwin"

Translated, it means:

For Unitarianism, I go along the crooked vale to Rhydygwin.

So in an area, close to his family roots in Llanfihangel Ystrad, there had been a house/Unitarian chapel of that name! . . . at least I have something to work on now!!!

Yay!!!

How far back have you gone? I can't find anything before my Great, Great, Great Grandmother, Elizabeth. Genealogy is fascinating.

We (my sister and I) have been doing both our paternal and maternal sides, although the main concentration, has been our maternal 'paternal', ancestors. On this particular side of the family, we can trace (with documentation) back to great great grandfather - however, we know, that they came form one particular family but, because of one lady who applied some 'jiggery pokery', we are having a lot of trouble finding all the birh/marriages and deaths! She managed to get rid of all the Bishops Transcripts and The Parish Records!! (she was a church warden and, a Justice of the peace [and also standing to gain a heck of a lot of money and property])Therefore, we are having to find any 'snippets' of info. regarding linking us with them - who we know such, a lot about! It is sooooooo annoying! I do have a few photos of her on my old Blogster blog - I'll get them off of there and put them in a post.
Let me know if you need any help with research on this side of the Atlantic, as I have got access to a lot of info.

I love genealogy and it's amazingly addictive! Since 'finding the web' - and, mores the point, learning how to master it [one day, I may be lucky] it is far easier and economical to do it on line

I know, in a roundabout way, where we are from, but its fun to learn about the characters, of the people discovered - totally fascinating
