Lost Iron Survey

I have looked everywhere in the house, closets, and garage -- except for three boxes way up on top of some garage cabinets -- and cannot find my clothes iron. I don't know what to do, so I'm turning the question over to Greasytown residents. Should I A. Ask for help getting those three boxes down, go through them, and ask for help putting them away again? B. Buy a new iron at Wal-mart? C. Take this as a sign from my Higher Power that I am meant never to touch an iron again for the remainde ...

Housewarming Party

Saturday was a good day. One of my friends from California was visiting, and our party went off without a hitch. Lots of people from Robert's job came, including his boss's VP and the President, both of whom brought their wives and housewarming gifts. I was so delighted to hear them, and Robert's colleagues, praise him highly. He is obviously well-liked and appreciated and respected. I'm so grateful that he works for a friendly, good company. We've been so busy, running back and forth to C ...

Raragoe Inspired Me to Post This

I used to write poetry. While finishing the massive filing project, I found some poems I'd saved. This is one I still like. It recounts a dream. Travels with Belle We were four, you and I and the two changed men. We ran uphill, across the long field. It looked like a parade, a celebration until I saw the soldier dead, one leg blown off and his chest bloody, his face death hard open mouth. We ran, sometimes I ran on all fours to keep up, the dry grass stiff under my hands. When the changed ...

Doctors, Tests and More Doctors

Mammogram -- Passed, thank you G-d. Papbst Blue Ribbon Schmear -- Not quite normal, repeat in six months. Dexascan -- Still unknown. Pulmonary function tests -- Lost 20 points on lung diffusion capacity test, which sucks. Within normal limits on everything else. One more doctor -- "Oh, that's probably related to your scleroderma. We could do surgery." Don't even ask. Skin cancer screening -- Passed, thank you G-d. Immuno-suppressive medication monitoring -- Basically okay and I'm not still ...

Beedith vs the Eic -- the Penultimate Chapter

Yet another set of letters from the Evil Insurance Company and the State of Arizona Department of Insurance a few weeks ago, requiring one more appeal letter before the State can investigate my complaint. With a deadline of August 1st. I did it last week, on time, after much procrastination, and am feeling great relief. Some day this will be resolved. I'm so grateful that the EIC is not my husband's employer's coverage provider any longer. We've been back with a Good Company again since Ma ...

Catching Up

So I went to bed on time for a change, and then lay awake for three frustrating, ache-y hours. My shoulders and legs hurt. Went over to Stephy's blog to find I'd just missed her, and caught up on her comments. I don't agree with her about Mr. Obama, but I admire and respect her passion. It was pleasantly hot today, clear and sunny and dry. I went out front and pulled weeds, and a stray wildflower. Regretfully -- I love flowers -- but the HOA is very strict about weeds in the front yards. B ...

Making Friends After 50

It's not like fifth grade, let me tell you. Remember asking, Do you have any brothers and sisters? What's your favorite color? Do you like Miss Crabapple? I've been venturing out to Newcomers and Welcome Club events here in Tucson, have met some nice women, and answered Where did you move from? countless times. One Scrabble luncheon was filled with interesting conversation. I've asked a neighbor over for coffee. We're planning a housewarming near the end of the summer. I've met some of the ...

Housewives Are Not Lazy Wives

This weekend I did ten loads of laundry, scrubbed and disinfected the master bathroom, cooked and washed dishes of course, went to Home Depot -- what Stephy would call an expotition -- changed litterboxes, took care of critters and husband, called my in-laws twice because Robert's dad is in the hospital again, mowed the lawn -- what a thrill! -- took out trash, watered the few plants that are not on the drip system, pulled weeds out front, unloaded all the junk that had accumulated in our ...

Sturm Und Drang

Monsoon season in Tucson has begun. The rain -- what there is of it -- is accompanied by much lightning and thunder. I'm enjoying it. My garden is happy. We saw two tiny yellow finches the other day in our back yard. Pretty. Spent this morning at the audiologist with my beloved husband. Hearing aids were recommended. Bummer. My father-in-law is in the hospital again for some tests. Poor guy. He should get to go home tomorrow. Busy week, running all the time.

Attack of the Calendar-impaired Junebugs

Stupid little things are all over the screen doors at night whenever I turn on a light and step outside. It's JULY, you moron insects. Go away and leave me alone. The yards and plants are are doing well with the recent rain and heavy irrigation. Some of the grass is even green. Fairy duster is covered with red fluffy blooms, and lantana are blooming again. The live oak and the roses, which had looked awful, have tiny new leaves. The dwarf Japanese crape myrtle is flowering. Onward and upwa ...

Mothers and Daughters

I've realized that every woman I meet has a story to tell about this. My neighbor is writing a novel about the relationship between a mother and daughter. One friend says her daughter is her greatest teacher. Another tells me she thinks of me as another daughter -- she already has three. My sister and I were deeply affected, in different ways, by our mother's inability to experience happiness. Didn't Nancy Friday write about this some thirty or forty years ago?

What's on Your Bucket List?

I'm curious, fellow Greasy residents, to hear what's on your bucket lists. I wrote mine after an upsetting doctor appointment. Realizing that Robert has already fulfilled my life-long desire to love and be loved, there is very little I need to do besides spend time with family and friends. Yes, I have some travel dreams, but those are minor, and we will take that Hawaiian Islands cruise next year, and go to Australia again in 2010. I want to just hang out with my sister and nephew, and my ...

Two-gallon-an-hour Drip

Thank you and muchas gracias to Jose and his crew for putting in the irrigation lines in today's sweltering heat. They worked hard, and I kept carrying out chilled bottled water and iced tea. Great guys. Since acquiring the house, we've killed one lantana plant and endangered a few others, but Jose and I are optimistic about the general fate of the garden. Robert will be delighted to no longer spend an hour hand-watering every evening. Drip lines rock.

Settling in to Our New Home

Oh my, but this has been a hectic month so far! Moving truck arrived, unpacking, working on the house and yard, a whirlwind trip to Chicago to visit Robert's father in the hospital. Dad is home now and, we hope, getting the help he needs. We'll go back later this summer for another visit. Shortly after arriving in Tucson, the A/C controller head in my car shorted out. It's repaired now, thank goodness, cuz the temps are in the low hundreds. That's okay -- our old home town in California wa ...

Four More Weeks

Just four weeks from now we hope to all be together in our new home. I'm counting the days, literally, in my hard copy journal. I miss Robert so terribly. And Robert and the dog miss each other terribly. And the cats will hate moving, as cats always hate change in their environments. Had a singularly unproductive day today. No caffeine, no accomplishments. In fact, I slept pretty much until suppertime. Now of course I'm wide awake and coasting along on half-caf. I intend to finish the offi ...

Hms Pinafore

Last night I went with friends to see a production of Gilbert & Sullivan's comic operetta "HMS Pinafore" at Cal Poly. The costumes, staging and physical comedy were all fine, but many of the key singers did not enunciate or project clearly enough for the lyrics to be understood. And of course with G&S, the words in those patter songs are where all the fun is. I still enjoyed myself, but felt bad for one of my friends, as this was her first G&S experience and not an ideal one.
