  Is Any of This Socialism?

Is Any of this Socialism? A Few from the Lunatic Right Would
Answer Yes

However, the vast majority of Americans realize they may
need some of these entitlements.

McCain says the economy is fine and these measures are not
necessary. He wants to continue the status quo.

Obama believes these elements would lead to a more just
society.

"Universal," "guaranteed" health care.

• "Free" college tuition.

• "Universal national service."

• "Universal 401(k)s" (in which the government would match
contributions made by "low- and moderate-income families").

• "Free" job training (even for criminals).

• "Wage insurance" (to supplement dislocated union workers' old
income levels).

• "Free" child care and "universal" preschool.

• More subsidized public housing.

• A fatter earned income tax credit for "working poor."

• And even a Global Poverty Act that amounts to a Marshall Plan for the
Third World, first and foremost Africa.

His new New Deal also guarantees a "living wage," with a $10
minimum wage indexed to inflation; and "fair trade" and "fair
labor practices."

To answer your question directly - yes, the programs you list are socialist by definition.
Great civilizations did not fail because they did not meet new challenges. Almost all failed because they ceased tending to daily challenges and threats. Socialism is an incipient threat to the healthy, wealthy society that (semi) free capitalism has created in America.
Leftist socialists believe the State and its people should take care of - even enrich - people who chose not to advance their own lives or who have opted for pleasurable addictions over self-development. Taking your socialist foolishness a step further has led us to building homes for dopers and drunks. There will be further steps too so long as Leftist
dementia is not reigned in.

I wish you would make the effort to grasp one or two of the human principles that make national socialism an impossible dream. Begin with the obvious reality that the easier we make it for people to minimize their efforts the more people will become lax. Who needs to work when everything is free? Who needs to work when the fruits of their labor are handed over to beggers and theives?
Dream on. Out.

If he thought there were cannibals registered to vote, he would be promising to deliver missionaries to their doorstep.

In answer to your question about his promises being socialism, yes most, if not all, of his policies would probably qualify. More importantly, everything he has been spewing for the last two years would qualify as fodder for fools' votes, also.

McCain is basically a liberal. Yet, Obama's stance is far to McCain's left in the political spectrum. It remains to be seen if the average voter is so dumbed-down and ignorant of the actual threat someone like Obama poses to the security of themselves and their nation. We'll know come November, won't we?

I agree with Oldfatguy [below]. The campaigns consist of pipe dreams from Obama. To make good on his promises, he must get out of Asia. Increasing our forces in Afghanistan will only increase the number massacred.
McCain has resorted to negative attacks spiced with a bump and grind show. He would do better if he made his announcements on YouPorn.

Most of these prescriptions are to make America competitive on the world scene.
Universal Health Care: A healthy population can produce goods and services. With 53 millions uninsured, the USA has a Third World health system. Developed countries have universal care that costs half the US version.
Free Collage Tuition: Innovation and technical progress now come from East Asia. The brightest students receive tuition etc. Unhampered by college costs, the students reimburse the society through higher taxes paid.
Universal national service works fine in Israel. The young people not in the military can open careers in teaching or in government service i.e. improving the infrastructure.
"Free" job training (even for criminals). This is less costly than a continued life in crime.
"Free" child care and "universal" preschool. This could permit single welfare mothers to work.
The other suggestions aimed at putting band-aids on past societal ills i.e. banks, stock market and real estate need far stronger measures than these.
Essentially, the public has a choice of mending some of their ways [Dems] or more of the same [GOP].
If history is any teacher, great civilizations have crumbled rather than meeting new challenges.

I do belief that the "average" voter is way far beyond being dumbed down, more on the order of absolute stupidity. As examples, the return to a democrat majority in the House, and most blatant, the continuous re-election of Kennedy and Kerry by the brain-dead morons of Massachussetts.
