  Meet Clyde!

This sweet boy is my latest foster dog. He's a miniature long haired dachshund.

I picked him up two weeks ago and he is just a bundle of love. I never heard him growl or saw him nip or act like he didn't like someone. He is very timid and was very shy until I got him home and then, he stuck to me like glue.

I worked with him to socialize him and acclimate him to all kinds of different people. I even accosted an older man in a cemetery - I thought he worked there. Gradually, I could see Clydey develop more confidence and willingness to meet people and other dogs. I even set up a play date for him with a pair of mini doxies and that went very well. He even liked the people.

Lucky, above, and her twin sister came to play with him and a fine time was had by all. Even though it was about 90 with 70% humidity.

On Monday, a single mom with a 14 year old daughter, adopted him. The mom said her daughter wanted a little dog to carry around, and cuddle, and sleep with, etc., etc. The exchange was set for today at 5p.m.

When we arrived at the store, he seemed a bit hesitant and worried when we got there, but I just figured he was tired after supervising the carpet cleaners for a couple of hours this afternoon. He hadn't liked the male carpet cleaner but he just barked at him. At the store, Clyde wasn't bothered by any of the customers who wandered in and out of the store and there were several.

However, when the new owner walked in, he immediately growled at the mom, and didn't want to stop. I'd never heard him growl in the two weeks I'd had him. That sent up red flags immediately. I always trust my own dogs and if the don't want to go to someone, I never force them. Dogs have a sixth sense about people. They KNOW.

Then, the mom and her friend got down on the floor and Clyde slunk over to her friend, but wouldn't go to the mom. More red flags. We were there for quite awhile because other customers were buying things and some were applying to adopt cats, and so on. The girl never got on the floor or called him or tried to pick him up or looked at him twice. The girl had no interest in that dog. Did the mom lie, or was it wishful thinking?

I realize that some of my thoughts are colored by my own feelings of love for Clyde. I let myself get too close to him and I let him get too close to me. He looked at me as if he'd been betrayed. He was pleading with me to run and grab him.

I just don't feel right about this placement.

I could never be a foster pet parent. They would all stay with me! Hope that little fellow is happy and the "red flags" have gone away.

Didn't even notice that! Must need new glasses.

I don't know how you can do what you do. It's gotta be difficult to give up a do you've become attached to, especially in the atmosphere you described. Time will tell.

You are right - it has been difficult with the two I had long term this year (Shyla and Ringo) but I knew they were going to wonderful situations. This time all my alarm bells and red flags went up into high gear. I'll have an update with better pics soon.

Hm perhaps Clyde will be coming back.

They always say a dogs instinct is pretty spot on about people.

Do you think his growling may have scared the little girl and that’s why she was not so into him?

You do good work Cat…

I'm going to do some serious praying for Clyde tonight. He may have growled because he became so attached to you.I remember getting my first rescue fur-baby.The Lady was reluctant because I already had 3 dogs.I explained to her my love of Bostons and how mine had passed 2 years earlier. So off I went, with my son along for the ride. The lady brought him out and he ran to me and all 25 pounds of him knocked me to the ground. He proceeded to lick me from head to toe.I was rolling in the grass with him and giggling. The Lady got upset and said he never did that with me.My son looked at her and said,my Mom really loves Bostons,he knows!!!!I brought Timbo home and the other 3 dogs loved him too.I call him my baby boy because he is the smallest of my 5.So this is his forever home and I love him more each day,if that's possible. I'm starting to get a little upset with the rescue owner. I called her yesterday at 7:30 and again today at 2:30. She hasn't called me back. I thought she might call Anna to get her take on it but she hadn't called her by 2:30 today. I just don't know what to do. Yesterday the rescue owner told me I was just about the best foster home she had and what a wonderful job I've done and yadda, yadda, yadda. So I REALLY don't get why she's ignoring my calls.

ACK!!! Did he hafta go with them??? Or do you still have him? I hope you still have him... how awful for him if he didn't want to go but had to... I am curious!
And YAY you for fostering. I love it.

No, she took him but I called the rescue owner and left a message so maybe we can get him back. I still feel awful about it.

Dogs always know what's best for them. He is adorable.

You are so right. I wish I had thought to ask if I could veto the adoption if I didn't think it was right. That's something I'll ask the rescue owner when I talk to her. I'm going to put up some better pictures on the next blog. It was very hot and humid when those were taken so he doesn't look his best.

Not good! I assume you did not place the dog with these people? I would find someone else. What a nice little dog! Trust your gut!

I think what you do is just wonderful, Cat, but I don't think I could do the placement part of the job, after all the love and effort you have put in caring for and fostering a dog, without have some right of refusal when faced with an unacceptable placement situation, or at least a right of delay. I don't think it an unreasonable right to have in your position.

I wish I had that authority. The rescue owner couldn't be there so the store owner and I handled it all.
