  Hero or Not?

I am a big fan of Texas history. I was brought up on it since my great grandfather started his career as one of the early Texas Rangers, signed on to fight Santa Ana and the Commanches.

Today, while watching the History Channel, I was surprised to hear a different account of the Alamo from a document left by one of Santa Ana's officers. They are still struggling with the authenticity of the document and feel that the University of Texas is not being objective when they say it is fraudulent.

This document says that seven men were captured and that one of them was Davy Crockett. They were brought before Santa Ana and all executed like common criminals. It give lie to the legend.

Texans love their heroes. I don't cotton to the new version either. Davy Crockett is still a hero to me as well as every last soul that was in the Alamo. History channel, do not rain on our parade.

Geez, the next thing you know they'll be saying that the Texan currently in the White House is competent. History is a bunch of lies agreed to...

I am thinking this one through- Davey Crockett died at the Alamo fighting Santa Ana, a ruthless Mexican general/ president. Texas wanted independence from Mexico. Does it matter whether Crockett died in the field of battle or was captured and executed? To shoot prisoners was as heinous then as it is today. In my book, either way he died at the Alamo fighting for Texas independence. It does not make Crockett less of a hero- just Santa Ana a more despicable general. Even the Mexicans eventually ran him out.

Santa Ana was a ruthless beast. I guess everyone knows that he was captured while entertaining himself with a beautiful mulatto girls. The Yellow Rose of Texas was written about that young lady. And no, it doesn't matter how Davy Crockett died...he is still a hero.

History Channel loves to do shows on speculation with unproven documents. It makes for interesting viewing and conspiracy theory fun. I love the History Channel, but they do this with everything from the bible/biblical history to UFO's etc.

Yes, they are notorious for making something out of nothing. The narrator I absolutely hate is Lynn Herzog. She always tries to make you think that you are going to get a big revelation and then...nothing.
