  Community Service

I spent most of my Saturday at a Non Profit event in the county where I work. This event was organized so that people could talk and find out information on the different orgainizations working and serving everyone in the county.

The orgainzations that were represented were:

Red Cross

Alzhimers Association

Sucide Prevention

Chamber of Commerce

Economic and Community Developement

Career Center

Boy and Girl Scouts

Cancer Society

National Guard

Emergency Management System

Rescue Squad

The Arc

Humane Society

Garden Club

Quilting Club

Arts Council

Historical Society

Agriculture Dept.

It was held in two locations in the county, for folks living in the East and furter in town. The turn out was mild, since this being the first one of it's kind. But the people who did turn out left with a lot of really good information.

I saw a lot of familiar faces, and made a few contacts. All in all it was a good day, and I enjoyed meeting everyone. (yeah I know I complained about having to go...but I enjoyed it)

Do you know the volunteer orgainzations in your community? There are a lot of hard working folks out there working hard to make our communties better...check some out...you'll learn alot.

I love volunteering and I have always appreciated the volunteer work done by people and agencies. How often I have collected for charities, made donations (monetary, clothing, etc.) to charities, walked for charities, helped at the food bank, tutored those with challenges in reading, and helped clean up the community. I did have a paying job for a few years(a really low paying job) working as a home health aide for the United Way, too, so I could make a little bit of a living but be able to help those in need with simple housekeeping, meal prep, errands, and personal care. I find it so very rewarding, but I believe my feeling of reward is a lot less important than the help that others are getting.

Volunteers make the world go 'round! I haven't looked into any in our new town.....but spent almost 8 years as a "volunteer EMT" in the small town I grew up in. It was such a rewarding thing! I'll find something when the time is right! Hats off to ya!!!

Don't give me credit Kristy, I fussed about going...but it was a good day. The folks that do it every day deserve all the credit..

I definitely will get involved in volunteering in some form or another -- I've been thinking about getting involved with the Literacy council here in Milwaukee County. When I was younger I worked (volunteered) at my local Humane Society but stopped after I found out they were killing perfectly healthy animals.

Our shelter is a no kill shelter and we literally get our animals from out west and down south where they have a shelter that kills the animals. Our shelter finds homes for some 500+ animals a year! Right now we are 8th runner up in this zootoo contest that if we win we will have a total shelter make-over or win $5,000-$10,000!

It is sad Matt that healthy animals have to be killed, but the Humane Society is trying to stop that. That's why they try so hard to get animals spayed and neutered.

I've always been involved with community service--everyone should be! And not only job connected or because they have to--a lot of rewards involved!
