  New Flooring

We were lucky enough the other week to be gifted a large sum of money by my MIL (note to self - stop bitching about her for a bit!) to help us do some work on the house that really needs done but funds right now shout "NO"!

With this money we will be able to extend into the loft space to give the boys more floor space in their room and hopefully add a velux window to give more light and add a way of generating a through draught as their room gets rally warm in the summer months.

We are also going to replace the dodgy laminate flooring in our hall - we hated it from day one but it was livable until the time came that we could afford to do something about it. Well it obviously hadn't been very well laid (nb don't buy a house that a joiner once lived in!!) and bits are starting to move, lift, sink and generally look like a real shoddy job.

We have looked at Karndean flooring before and really liked it, except the price! But with our little winfall we are now in a position to act. We looked at the weekend saw an American Oak style we really liked, they priced it based on our rough measurements and came back with a kick in the ass shy of £950!! OMG that is way more expensive than we hope it would be. That means either we do the floor or the work on the boys room - but no way could we do both. I think we must have looked like we had just been punched in the stomach and the sales woman suggested they come out and measure properly and do a proper free quotation for us.

They measured up yesterday. The call came through this morning and from the sound of her voice I thought it is gonna be even more horrific than the rough quote from the weekend. Hell no it was brilliant! £565 all in and this is even taken in the fact that we have floor boards instead of chipboard underneath which means we need a thicker, more expensive ply. Ya dancer, they also have a really cool orange spaghetti floor rug that we will try and get thrown in at a reduced rate as well! Well they can only say "No"! we will also try and point out the fact that we have bought carpets for 4 other rooms from them within the past 3 years too - well it might work. Ya gotta try.

Watch this space for pictures of the work in progress.

We don't do it off - I hate upheval and the kids won't stay out of the way! But 6 hours from now we should be looking at a shiny new floor that is the business.

but I'll bet if you'd said OK to the 950 that's what you would have been charged.
