  Pics from Around the Yard

I had the camera out to take a picture of the first cucumber of the season--just in case something unfortunate happens to it before it's ready to harvest, and somebody pulled into the driveway. This is an event that Buster finds irresistible. That is, he can't resist making a comment about it.

But meanwhile, back in the garden... Here's the cuke patch....

And the guest of honor..... Better looking than any of what we got last year!

The squash are bigger, but they have no fruit yet.

Tomato and pepper plants are nothing to blog about, but the horseradish has nice bushy tops, so maybe I'll get to harvest some this year. Last time I tried to harvest they were only as thick as a pencil, so I replanted it.

So, slugs and other bugs are under control, and so are the weeds. We got 2 inches of rain last night, which we needed, and it's going to be hot and not too humid for the rest of the week. Maybe even the slow tomato plants can catch up!

Was everything ok in the garden?
reply by hopefields on July 24, 2008 3:22 PM ()
It's been raining, more than 4 inches, so I don't know how things are doing out there yet. Branches down, and stuff like that. The worst is over, so I"m going out in a few minutes to see what's happening.

Buster stole the show,he is so cute.I have no yard to grow a garden,I'm jealous.Your garden looks like you might have a nice crop this year.Nice pics. Laurie

It's possible to grow a few plants in containers on a porch or patio. I did this last year. The only drawback is that the afternoon sun can bake the moisture right out of the containers. Aside from that, it works well, and bugs are no problem--well, crawling bugs, slugs, etc are no problem.

Buster looks good in his harness.
Your garden is growing! Have you ever made sliced cucumbers in a mayo and half-n-half sauce? It's really good.

I've had it! It is good, but I don't know how to make it. Hopefully I'll have enough cukes this year to try a few new things. Maybe homemade pickles!

John, explain to me about Wheatens. They look a lot like beagles and this is an unfamilar breed to me. Tell me more about them, they are very cute.

I'm not familiar with the term Wheaten. However, since you mention "cute", I know you're talking about Buster! The shelter I adopted him from listed him as an American coonhound. The vet where I had been taking Benny, and now take Buster also says he's a treeing walker coonhound. Go figure. Either way, they are sent hounds with a distinctive vocalization (think foghorn). They are used for hunting, but Buster is afraid of anything that remotely sounds like a gun shot, which is probably why he was abandoned in the woods in February. They have personality--more than some breeds--and can easily get their feelings hurt. They can also be stubborn, although food is a great motivator! Benny the mutt is much smarter in human terms, but Buster knows how to be a good coonhound (except for the gun thing).

Nice looking garden! Right now all we have are tomato's but that was the test. Since they survived and are thriving, we take on another veggie! Busters cute!

Will do, but don't forget, grandbaby #3 is a girl! Store-bought 'maters taste like cardboard, so I only eat homegrowns. Yup, fall is BLT season.

Our tomato plants (3 varieties) have a ton, I mean a TON of blooms, but no tomato's yet (what's the deal?) We had a very first cuke in a salad last night and I got a one little zucchini and a decent summer squash so far. If/When the tomato's do come in, I swear I'll be able to set up a stand at the end of my driveway,
Your garden looks well tended to. (Ours has quite a bit of weeds, but my husband just keeps moving the cucumber vines around over top of them and they get choked out, )

This is the first year I've done a really good job with weeding, but it hasn't made a difference.
reply by jjoohhnn on July 16, 2008 7:42 AM ()
it seems like tomatoes are not doing well this year, I have heard a few people complaining. I have lots of green cherry tomatoes but so far nothing on the big tomatoe plants. and thats the whole reason I plant a garden, for the tomatoes!

My buddy lives 1000 feet higher than I do and his plants are almost chest high (he's shorter than me). It's too soon around here for any ripe ones, but his are doing much better!
