Cultural event #2
Every year in the small town of Oroville, Ca there's a small parade to celebrate the Veteran's that fought and served our country. This year the people gathered sparsely in the streets, and stood in the rain to watch the underproduced parade go marching by. I didn't even know it was happening until I was driving to work, which happens to be located on that same street. When I finally found a way around the street baracades to get my car parked, I opened the shop and stood near the window to see the small event. I felt somewhat ashamed that I didn't even know it was Veteran's Day. Then I found myself trying to appreciate why the crowd, made up of mainly senior citizens clad in their millitary outfits, gather even in the cold to watch this silly parade.
It's the same floats every year, I bet some only get brought our for this one occasion. The parade concisted of some millitary issue Jeeps filled with waving vets holding American flags, millitary ambulances with their sirens going off, some flatbed trucks loaded with generations of those who served and are still serving our country, some middle school marching bands, and some of the local vehicles from the amory down the street. I'll be honest, it's no Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, but there's a good reason to be there. That's to show that you respect what these people are doing, and have done, for our country. Without the sacrifices these men and women made, this wouldn't be the same country. So I would recomend that If you are near the Oroville area next year on November 11, that you take a ride to Montgomery St. at 12:00 to give some thanks to our veterans, because we have a lot to be thankful for.
