Didn't win the lotto. The weather outside is GORGEOUS! It would have been the perfect first day of the rest of my life had I won. *sigh*

Lately I have been feeling caged up. Maybe it's spring? I don't know. I just feel like when I am telling my co-workers that I am going down the hall (to pee, because we have to let each other know for phone coverage) I just want to flee. That or scream "What the F is wrong with a call going to voicemail????" But I mean really... we are only in the year 2008. Working for a boss who will NOT give up paper and will not use the outlook scheduler and will NOT use his blackberry for reminders, well, what can I expect.

I wish I knew a way to sustain myself outside this '9-5' BS. I want some freedom in my day. I want to be able to pee without announcing it to my co-workers. I am not against working at all, I just can't stand this being "owned" business, ya know? I really think there is a difference. When I do my pet sits I enjoy myself. I like hanging out with cats and dogs and making sure they are played with, fed and have fresh water. I love it. I just can't make ends meet in this area on that alone.

I need to start thinking outside the box. I need to come up with REASONABLE idea's of what to do. I was told about freelancing for extra money, but then I was told it's very hard to get into. I need to find something within my reach. Although I also could start reaching further. I just can't take this much longer. I am going insane taking orders from others for shit they don't want to do themselves. Ah, the life of an admin...

It's not all bad. I am learning new things here, and honestly, if that was the main focus of my day, I would probably be happier. Alas it's not. It's a small chunk of my week. But again, what can ya do...

Can you see me at my next interview?

Interviewer: Why do you want to leave your current job?
Me: Because I had to tell them every time I had to pee, and I drink a lot of water so it got old.

*sigh*

Happy hump day everyone!

Phones wouldn't be sooooo bad at work if the crazy boss would only use email. Talking to him feels like part of my soul is being sucked away. I got yelled at yesterday for not paging someone - but our paging system sucks.

I wanted to quit yesterday - so I know how you feel.

I tell everyone now at this trade show that I am at everytime I have to use the ladies room. It's not fun believe me. Did I mention that I miss you?

If I got to go to Vegas I would announce I had to pee without hesitation!

You need a job in tune with what you love. You'll find it... and then you'll look back and laugh at the days you had to announce every time you had to go pee.

I need to stop whining and start finding something better....

I'm getting really tired of answering the phones myself. I've only been doing it for a few months. The worst for me is scheduling my lunch hour everyday. *bleck!*

I hate phones at work... bleh. I think email should take over completely!!!

When I'm faced with major decisions, I sit down and make lists of the choices. It's not an ordinary list though with pros on the left side of the page and cons on the right. It is a system that gives points to each "thing" on the list. The points range from 0 to 6 with 6 being what is very, very important to you. If you have a couple of things in mind, you would make two lists, then add up the points. The one with the highest total is probably the one you want to do. HTH.

That is a really good idea! Thanks!

Like Jeri, I changed careers when I was about 40 too. I was 39 when I got my first full time teaching job. It took three years of college (on top of a bachelor's and a masters) to do it but it was soooooo worth it. I loved every minute of it. If it's your mortgage that's holding you back, sell your condo and go for the change. Sell it even if you lose money on the deal. I've known people that have lost $20,000 or $30,000 when selling their houses but were delighted to do it. Go for it!

hmmm
Yeah, it's that risk people keep talking about hey?
Gawd I wish my fairy Godmother would come tell me what I need to do!

Kristy, life is too short to be stuck doing something that you hate! The reason I became a teacher is because I actually like it. The kids are new every year, I enjoy what I teach and I'm good at it. It's not a chore going into work most mornings. Listen, if you want to work with animals, that's where you need to be. This will make you old before your time. Figure something out. Check around. Even if you can take it on as a part time job, just to know that you can go there twice a week. Think about it. Love ya, Deb

Deb,
I did not mean to disparage the teaching profession in any way with my comment on this post. I was a teach for almost twenty years, and my wife was a teacher for 36 years. I LOVED teaching! I left because of two hateful, incompentent principals that I had back to back, both of whom had no business being around kids (one was cited for sexual harrassment). They made good teachers'lives miserable.

I am really trying to figure something out. Seriously. I am going insane.
Then I hear about R's fabulous job and SB who is in Vegas on business and get's every other Friday off in the summer and I really want to just shoot myself. I HATE IT!!!! Not that their jobs are ideal either, but they have Perks!!!
I need to figure something out, but I am at a wall or something that I can't see past. I have been wanting out for years now. How??? I hope it comes to me sooner rather than later...

There are ways to get out of the 9 - 5 work-a-day world, but not without risks and not without lowering your standard of living, at least for a little while.
I got out of teaching because I couldn't stand the BS from the administrators any longer. (These were simply men and women who were mainly concerned about looking good in the newspapers, and to hell with the kids.)
After quitting, I went into business. It was a HUGE step, and scary as all hell at first. Lots of sacrifices, but they all paid off in the end, and I'm living a life that I never dreamed possible before.
comment by hayduke on May 7, 2008 9:27 AM ()
You know, hayduke, I've been blessed to have a great administrator who really supports everything I do. I don't like some of the crap, but most of it is the same thing everyone else hates, excess paperwork, stupid rules, etc. For the most part, I really like what I do or I wouldn't have been at it so long.
reply by teacherwoman on May 7, 2008 1:54 PM ()
actually I just sent you an email about all this! hahaha
Advice welcome!

I don't often do this because it has a tendency to appear as if I'm lecturing, but I'm going to give you some unsolicited advice...okay?
Don't wait to win Lotto. You will be waiting all of your life, and, when you're my age, you may just look back and wish that you had done things differently.
I suggest that a person bite the bullet for a few year and cut back on extravagant pleasures. That way, he or she can put that money towards getting out of debt and putting something away in the bank. He or she may have to do this for a few years. (And that is hard thing to do in this age of instant gratification!) Then, when some money is saved up, that person can take the plunge.
For me, it took a little over a year before I started earning money. It was scary for a while. I almost went under.
But I didn't. Now, I own three houses (Maine, CT, and FL), have horses, a sailboat, I ski, I scuba dive, I take vacations all over the world, and I am ridiculously happy! But it didn't come to me on a silver platter. Planning, hard work, sacrifice, budgeting and changing my pants often when I was so scared that I #### them was all part of the deal.
But I'm preaching now, huh? Sorry!
reply by hayduke on May 7, 2008 11:10 AM ()
Hmm... sometimes you are so wise my friend! I was told once before that I needed to stop making excuses as to why I couldn't do it.
My problem lies in the fact that I have no savings and as of right now, making very decent money as an admin, am just scraping by, and I have debt. Ya know? I would love to take a risk if I knew I could get by for a month or two with no money coming in. That's just not the case though. How do I remedy this? I need to win the lotto.
reply by kristilyn3 on May 7, 2008 10:50 AM ()
You know I think you would be great owning a pet service...you know where folks drop off their pets during the day, or when they have to go out of town...It would be your "own" business, and you would be around the animals you love..
comment by elfie33 on May 7, 2008 8:15 AM ()
yeah. R and I have talked about that... it seems so far away.
He and his friend aren't putting their property on the market for awhile so to me everything just seems STAGNANT. Forever unchanging hell of the 9-5.
reply by kristilyn3 on May 7, 2008 8:26 AM ()
Ah, just make a sign "I'm away from my desk to pee"
comment by blogdreamz on May 7, 2008 7:55 AM ()
a sign that could answer the phone? Ingenious!

Money is always a hard issue, but there are better admin jobs out there. I love mine. It took me a long time to find it, but I eventually did.
comment by kissy2008 on May 7, 2008 7:43 AM ()
I don't know why I don't love this admin job, ya know? I think I have been looking for an admin position that I would like but it never fits. I don't think admin is the field for me, sadly, cuz that's what I am qualified to do!
reply by kristilyn3 on May 7, 2008 8:25 AM ()
Christy, you need to do what you love. How about starting Vet school, maybe you can find a few night classes? Or get a grant and go full time.
You are too young and have too much life ahead of you to be chained to a job you hate. I changed careers at 40 and have never been sorry.
comment by elderjane on May 7, 2008 7:21 AM ()
But I can't afford my mortgage if I do what I want, ya know? I can't afford it now, let alone without my decent paycheck...
It just doesn't work out in my head, which makes me more miserable...
