In ancient legends, it was believed the person who wore a ruby was blessed with health, wisdom, wealth, and outstanding success in affairs of the heart.
Long ago it was said that rubbing your with a ruby would help maintain its youthful appearance.
Unflawed rubies, in sizes larger than five carats are more valuable than diamonds of equal quality and size.
The ruby mines of Myanmar (Burma), where Stone Age and Bronze Age mining tools have been found, are older than history.
Marco Polo wrote that Kublai Kahn, Mongol Emperor of China, offered an entire city for a ruby the size of a man's finger.
Eastern legends maintain that ruby contains the spark of life and is "a deep drop of the heart's blood of Mother Earth."

Rubies are beautiful. My stepmom's name was Ruby and I bought her some Ruby earrings that she loved. She wore them everytime she came to visit me. Sadly, she passed away a few years ago. p.s. Her birthday was actually in October. I thought that Opals were the birthstone for October, but your list above has something else listed. I'll have to check that out. Hope all is well with you. Love ya - Annie :o)
Mine is August - Peridot, which I pronounce incorrectly as Peri-Dott (correct is Peri-Doe, apparently). I used to think it was sort of a washed out wimpy color, which it is, compared to an emerald, but what the heck, it's okay.
I love rubies, but like my birthstone best. I love shades of blue. Nena
I LOVE July's birthstone because it is RED like my January birthstone just not as dark as a garnet.
