  Dandelions

A lot of people hate dandelions. This time of the year, they erupt all over the place and the wind carries their seed far and wide.

Here's my dictionary's definition: a widely distributed weed of the daisy family, with a rosette of leaves, bright yellow flowers followed by globular heads of seeds with downy tufts, and stems containing a milky latex.

Perhaps if I had a lawn, I'd feel like everyone else does about dandelions. I like them. The bold, glorious yellow is a wonderful color. A field full of it is even more glorious. So what if they are a "weed"; that matters not to me. Most weeds flower in their own way, some less subtly than others. There are flowering weeds all over my property in all the colors of the rainbow. I cherish them all. Some of them I even water on occasion, especially if they happen to be close to another plant that I've put in the ground.

Perhaps I'll do a post one day soon with photos of some of these "weeds" and let you judge for yourself whether or not they rate eradication. Meanwhile, I shall continue to enjoy the bright yellow dandelions. At least they come up, unlike all those packaged seeds I bought and planted.

One man's weed is another's flower.

I knew about the wine but not about the leaves being good to cook.

I'll have to research what the indians did with them. Perhaps they made dye from the yellow flower.

Dandelion wine is good. the English name comes fro 'dents de lion' lion's teeth, but in French it's known as pisenlit - piss in the bed... so don't eat too much of them

As a city kid in the Bronx I remember the wonder of finding my first dandelion and blowing off the head of seeds--all I could think of was how lucky country kids were with such beautiful/fun flowers all around!

We've got a good crop coming on, too. You're right about appreciating them instead of cursing them, but I'll probably be out there with the weed n feed trying to discourage them from taking over the lawn. The ones on the road I'll leave alone.

I guess this would apply to some people too.

I'll have to give 'em a try. Thanx.

Pick the leaves for a great salad. A bit bitter, but good with hot bacon dressing! You have to get them early, before the flowers come out and before the neighbor's dog pees on them.
