  A Morning Walk

We drove just outside of town this morning and headed into the woods with Huxley. Since he's so low to the ground, we have to stick to the trail which, in this case, is an old horse trail. The challenge is to keep him from eating the horse poop. Here's what it looked like as we started out:

There's a lot of ponderosa pine there and, when you lay down under one and look up, this is the view:

We had waited too late in the morning and it was already getting too hot for the little panting dachshund. My wife poured some water into my cupped hands and the Huxster drank gratefully. Then we came upon what I think must be an old, abandoned chuck wagon.

The trail was essentially uphill and we reached a point where we thought, if we didn't turn back, we'd be carrying Huxley, so we began a slow back track toward where we'd parked the truck. This last photo is from where we turned back. You can see the sandstone hoodoos up at the top.

My wife and I vowed to return in the early evening hours without Huxley to walk further up the trail. I may carry a sack for collecting rocks for my rock garden. There's a dry wash that parallels the trail that is strewn with some very colorful specimens.

Thanks for sharing those lovely pics. We have nothing as gloriously beautiful within walking distance where I'm from.

This looks like part of a national park, those sandstone structures are so amazing-looking.

It does resemble Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park which is about 40 min. away.

Eh that Poderosa pic is quality stuff, you should frame that and exhibit it. It's a great shot

The old chuck wagon is fascinating.

Lovely pictures. I like the twilight walks best. Huxley is not built for hikeing.

I'm glad you left the rocks where they were. I don't like it when visitors up here take rocks home because they pick them up along the trails and in our yard where people walk, so instead of a pretty rock for everyone to enjoy now and forever, there is a damp hole in the ground and pretty soon I don't have a nice looking area, just a bunch of little dents where rocks used to be. It took many years for the soil and moss to grow up around those rocks and now there is a hole. I don't go around their yard and steal things, do I? They take the rocks home to their tract house 'rock garden' and leave them there when they move or die and then someone re-landscapes and throws the rocks away. And my yard still has dents.

The beauty of your vicinity never ceases to amaze me! You have an excellent eye for picture taking!! I especially like the first one. Trails are somehow very appealing to me. I envy you your rocks. There seem to be a number of rock collectors here. I just read elderjane's (Jeri's) account of her rock collection for her garden!!

I have a rock garden. ( I think I mentioned it before) All my rocks are labeled from my trips. We need photos of your rock garden, an update.

Years ago, we discussed the prospect of collecting at least one rock from every hike. This was long before we moved out to where they grow rocks like crazy. We would have to have labeled them, naturally, as you have, but I don't know where we'd keep 'em. So I'm glad we didn't do that. But I even pick up a couple of rocks on a morning walk around my neighborhood to toss into the rock garden.
