A New (Or Old) Look

I was at CVS a couple of days ago to pick up my prescriptions. I did something that I never thought I would ever do. I happened to go down the aisle with the hair care products. It was sort of a random thing. But, as I was walking, something caught my eye. That is right, it was the Rogaine stuff. I will admit that for the longest time, it really started to bother me when I first started sporting the tonsure. You know, that unique haircut where they shave off that little spot in the back to ...

Teen Reading is Measuring Up

Well, I had a nice surprise this week after counting up the reading for the last week. Each time the teens in the summer reading program read a book, they fill out a review slip for the weekly drawing. The first week was a little off, but when I added in the reading for this week, the kids have already read 91 books, which is a big boost over last week. That is a really good sign. If they stick on this pace, it will be close for them hitting 350 books over six weeks. Of course, if this pas ...

Paper Announces Candidates on the Ballot

Today's paper had a complete listing of all the local candidates that completed and submitted qualified nomination papers for November's election. The good news is that it confirmed that I did get the required signatures. There are officially 8 candidates, including myself, running for three seats on the school committee. None of this was really news to me, but it was cool to see my name in the paper again. This weekend I filled out a form that needed to be turned into one of the local pap ...

This novel concludes the fantastic tale of the Circle. The six heroes finally come head to head with the evil vampire queen Lilith in the alternate world of Geall. The fate of all reality rests on their success. If they do not succeed, then all hope of survival for anyone beside the vampires will end. This third novel focuses on the final, most unlikely of couples. Cian is a vampire who has survived for 900 years. Moira is the princess of Geall who is not only being forced to take on the m ...

Oh Happy Day - a Movie Review

This British import premiered on the Logo Network on Sunday night. It is one of the first true romantic comedy that I have seen centering around gay men without having political or health issues popping into the story. It is about two guys meeting, falling in love, almost losing it all, and ... you know, the usuall happy ending. The story centers around Jonathan, a black man living in London who is just on the cusp of making it big in the advertising business. He has big hopes of getting a ...

Cast Away - a Movie Review

You are probably all thinking that I must be one of the last people on the planet to finally get around to seeing this one. I am not sure why I put it off for so long. I think a big part of it was because I was afraid about how disappointed I might end up being because everyone I know so loved it. I could not believe that I would enjoy a movie that is over two hours that spends most of the time with only one performer alone on an island. To set the scene, the protagonist is Chuck Noland, w ...

Holidays on Ice

This was my first time experiencing the humor of David Sedaris, and it was a fun leap to make. David Sedaris is a pretty popular essayist not completely unlike Augusten Burroughs. In the case of this work, though, the tales have nothing to do with his family, and they appear to be a mixture of his own experiences and examples of stated fiction rather than just being a memoir. This volume pulls together a mixture of previously pubished works that all have ties to the holiday season. It is a ...

You Are What You Watch! ... or Maybe Not?

A lot of us on her talk about what we watch from time to time. I know the Brian is really good about sharing his thoughts about reality TV shows. From time to time, I do the same. Well, it really got me thinking: what does what we watch you you guys about who we are as people, particularly our interests. Obviously, it tells you basically that we do watch television, which not everyone does. At the same time, there is more to it when you look at what we choose to watch. This is ovciously tr ...

Justice, Volume 3

This graphic novel trilogy comes to a great conclusion as the heroes are able to start figuring out what is really going on. This allows them to better coordinate their skills so as to confront what the supervillains have been doing and overcome their recent failures. The confrontation spreads around the world. There is no shortage of action going on as the Justice League breaks down into teams to confront the villains where they have dug in. It really is a great conclusion to an interesti ...

A Different Kind of Exercize

On Friday, Ray was finally able to get his hands on a WiiFit. I am not really 100% sure why he was so into getting this one. He kept saying that it ws for me, but I am pretty happy with the new exercize routine I have been working on for the past few months. The weight training with the bike riding has me feeling really good. It seems to get my day started better than a cup of coffee, and it seems to be doing a pretty good job with keeping my weight done and letting me tone up. A part of m ...

Justice, Volume 2

With this second volume in the trilogy, it has become clear that the supervillains are doing what they think needs to be done to keep their world safe. Part of that, though, means removing the Justice League so it cannot interfere in those plans. One of the most important aspects of that is removing the big three: Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman. That is accomplished in a unique way for each of them and through a great amount of teamwork between many of the supervillains. This forces a ...

Since its inception, the Justice League of America has always been the premier team of superheroes for DC Comics. Most of you probably recognize at least some of the faces on this cover. Well, it is going to take the united forces of all of them if they are going to get out of this one alive. The trouble starts as many of the world's supervillains start having the same nightmare. A terrible crisis is sweeping the planet, destroying everything and everyone. Despite the best efforts of the J ...

Secret Invasion: the Infiltration

One of the best things that superhero comics do are massive team-ups where all of your favorite superheroes get together to kick butt against some horrible force that is about to destroy everything. Both Marvel and DC have no trouble with creating these types of tales, but Marvel seems to have become addicted to them. These superteam-ups force readers to buy issues of so many titles to get the "complete" story and guarantee stronger sales for the whole franchise. Marvel pretty much does on ...

Dance of the Gods by Nora Roberts

Roberts picks up right where she left off with Morrigan's Cross. The six members of the circle have just had their first head-on confrontation with the vampiric forces of Lilith. They know that the real battle will not take place until Samhain (Halloween to us non-Wiccans). The team has settled into the ancestral home of Cian and Hoyt to train and find that sometimes forming a team is more difficult than weilding weapons. Bickering, infighting and romantic tension create a backdrop as they ...

Doing a Workshop for My Co-workers

Fridays are usually my day off during the summer. With summer reading in full bloom, the Reference Department and the Children's Room at work are getting hit with requests for more help for teens in choosing their books. It can be a difficult thing to do because young adult literature spans the years between 11 and 18. There is a lot of maturity to be developed in that time period, which means some of the books for older young adults can have more adult themes. This led to some concerns by ...

Today, I stopped off at town hall to drop off my nomination papers. Once I declared my candidacy, I had to pcik up these papers so I could go around to get signatures supporting the possibility of having my name on the ballot as a candidate. Th ...

An Update on Summer Reading

Things are going pretty well with summer reading. We are in the middle of our second week of the program and i already have 47 young adults signed up for the program. That is a pretty good start since registration will still trickle in for the next few weeks. They are also off to a great start with reading. They read a total of 33 books in the first week. That is pretty impressive for the first week. I know that doesn't sound like a ton of books, but we usually have the lowest results duri ...
