Cast Away - a Movie Review

You are probably all thinking that I must be one of the last people on the planet to finally get around to seeing this one. I am not sure why I put it off for so long. I think a big part of it was because I was afraid about how disappointed I might end up being because everyone I know so loved it. I could not believe that I would enjoy a movie that is over two hours that spends most of the time with only one performer alone on an island.

To set the scene, the protagonist is Chuck Noland, who is played by Tom Hanks. He has a busy career as an employee for FedEx. Like so many of us, he makes the mistake of devoting too much time to work. So much so that he doesn't get to experience the full joy of being with his girlfriend and almost fiancee Kelly, who is played by Helen Hunt.

As the Christmas season sets in, the two of them are finding it difficult to schedule time with each other around their need to attend the usual holiday oblications and his own work schedule. It all comes to a head on Christmas Eve, when he has to head out on a major assignment. Unfortunately, the plane hits terrible weather and must divert from the designated flight path. Unfortunately, it is not enough of a diversion, because the plane goes down in the high seas. Out of all five aboard, he is the only survivor, and he is barely able to make his way to a nearby island with the help of a tiny inflatable raft.

From there on, his life changes, forcing him to seriously reconsider what is most important. He holds on to his love of Kelly and his returning to her as a reason to keep fighting to survive. For weeks, he starts to collect packages that floated to the island from the plane that had sunk. He starts to open packages witht he hopes of finding things that will help him survive. It works, and the most surprising treasure is in the form of a volleyball, which ends up becoming his only friend on the island.

The story is heartbreaking in the troubles he must face as he fights to survive. In so many ways, it is hard not to compare it to the very popular series Lost, which is overwhelmed with superstition and bizarro subplots. This is a story of survival that keeps you cheering for Chuck while also cringing at some of the things that he must do.

It is really one of those WOW movies that gets you thinking. What would you do if you were in that situation? Is he a better person for his experiences? Would you be able to do the things he does? What role does sanity play in survival? And what was really the meaning of the title since it takes on a bit of the form of double entendre?

I love this movie and have seen it several times. I am a Tom Hanks fan and appreciate his efforts and successes more often than not. My interest never waivered in this movie...I could feel his thoughts and marveled at the survival techniques...(maybe that's how I got to be a fan of the show Survivor). As often as I've seen it, I'll watch it again without hesitation.

It is amazing how quickly the time flew while I was watching it. It is definitely a sign of how much I liked it.

I watched it twice. Got something different out of it the second time.

I will have to try watching it again. I am not surprised that it would have more meanings if you watched it again. It seemed like it is that kind of movie.

I love that movie and he really deserved the Oscar that year, even though Russell Crowe did a great job in Gladiator, as far as I'm concerned, Tom had the more challenging role as an actor

It was amazing how the movie stayed so interesting when there was only one character in a good chunk of it.

Tom Hanks has developed into one of the finest actors in the businness today. The interesting thing about this film was that Hanks filmed half of this movie, then he shot "Green Mile" and then came back and finished "Castaway"

I did not realize that. That is really interesting.
It is amazing how he went from doing more light comedy to serious stuff like his more recent work.

Loved this movie & I don't think I would have faired well at all if it were I stuck on an island all alone. OH, and just one more movie to add that Brian45 forgot to mention below.... My all time favorite movie, The Money Pit with Shelley Lone & Tom Hanks. He's a great actor.

I love both of those movies too!!

I cried in this movie. I think it was just his way of keeping his sanity, even though it would appear to most people that he had lost his sanity.

Enjoyed your review. Annie :o)

I so agree with you you about his reasons for doing it! In some ways, it was important for him to do that.

Somehow, I don't think I would have done as well as Chuck did.

Brian, I loved that one with Darryl Hannah (Splash) My favorite was Joe VS. The Volcano...kinda funny to watch that one and castaway back to back

Remember Hanks in the tv show "Bosom Buddies?" Cute show-him and his buddy dressed up as women so they could stay in this "all girls" sorority (or something like that!) but I wouldn't buy it on dvd. Enjoyed Hanks in "Forrest Gump" (although thought it was a little corny, I liked (didn't love!) his performance and Gary Sinese was EXCELLENT), "Philadelphia" (which I thought he deserved the Academy Award for MORE THAN "Forrest!") "Sleepless In Seattle," "Big," and the one with Daryl Hannah?? Was that "Big?" She was a mermaid. Can't remember

Have never seen this AJ. Not that I don't like Hanks because I do but this particular theme of someone "stranded on an island" does not grab me. Sounds like you enjoyed it a lot and IT IS interesting to think about WHAT we would do stranded on an island like that!

OK. I just commented to myself rather than relpying to yours! What is wrong with me!
Anyway, this was meant for you: Somehow, I don't think I would have done as well as Chuck did.
