  The Heat Man Cometh

Well, if I had any doubt about whether I should take up Martin's suggestion about moving down to Florida, the last couple of days have proven that I have no interest in the weather down here. We have been slammed with a wave of heat that has dragged us into the upper 80s and 90s.

In all honesty, I have no interest in this kind of heat. You can't do ANYTHING when it is that hot. I am pretty much just hiding away inside the house trying to stay comfortable. We have the air conditioners going and we are off to the movies in a few minutes.

I finally talked Ray into going to say Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (review to follow sometime this evening!). It is not that he didn't want to see it, but he is not a big fan of movie theaters. He thinks they are just too expensive. I know that I have heard a number of mediocre reviews so I don't have great hopes for the movie, but I still really want to see it.

I just hope that we don't burst in to flames while we are driving there. I just keep getting these images of the tires on the truck melting and sticking to the road so we never actually make it there. Just kidding!

I wonder if we will break down and buy snacks. The cheapest popcorn/soda deal actually costs more than the price of a ticket! I am just so totally floored by that.

Well, the one good thing is that it will be comfortable in the theater, and we will hopefully enjoy the movie.

Catch you all laterz!

I just want to add something...my aunt just came in from Florida and was looking forward to things being a little cooler than back at home. Surprise! lol She said she never did get a break from the heat at all. Matter of fact, some places in Florida were cooler than here.

Your poor aunt!

Well, I'm pretty much forced to stay inside during the day, so I'm in A/C anyway, regardless of what is going on outside. But, knowing it's summer-like is tremendous when I do head out because it means there is so much to do and so little obstacles to keep me from doing them. We were able to sit by the water, under the shade of a tree..and you wouldn't believe it, but the wind off the water was just brisk enough to make exposed skin get an occassional goosebump. It's often cooler outside than inside an un-airconditioned building at night, so we like to take a little walk sometime after dusk. It's just so nice that slippery roads or iced-up windshields do not have to be dealt with. I don't like excessive heat, either...especially with high humidity (I can get quite miserable)... but this is the time of year that is synonomous with "lots to do and lots going on", and I love it. There literally is more than a share of things to choose from every day, and so much of it is fun...maybe even cheap or free. When it's too hot to do anything else, I just go where there's water, even if I only stick my feet in.

Sounds like a good way to confront the heat.

I hate excesses of any kind. Humidity sucks unless you've got a lake or pool or something to cool off in.
We just had a severe storm over the weekend. It left people without electricity for hours and caused major flash flooding in low lying areas. The crappy weather also caused my high school graduation to be held indoors this year instead of outside -- first time in many years it wasn't held on the football field. This entire week is supposed to be rainy. I can just imagine what the mosquito season will be like.

Definitely a rough start to the season! There really is no good reason for this kind of weather.

AJ, do you know who I was referring to about that "Divine" comment? You can e-mail me privately if you want
comment by brian45 on June 8, 2008 9:20 PM ()
I do. She was a drag queen (and not exactly a pretty one) who was in a number of movies by John Waters.

AJ, I didn't know Divine was still alive?

Aaron, like you, I really don't like the heat! I like it about 72 degrees Farenheit, at all times! I think we're more like Ray... haven't been to a movie in ages. I didn't even know about the cost of popcorn & drink! Hope you had fun!
comment by sunlight on June 8, 2008 3:24 PM ()
Sunlight, I would love that especially since we may be neighbors someday if I decide to move to sunny L.A. Where do you live there? I almost called you sunshine You look so happy in your profile-good to see How do you like Los Angeles? Are you in "the biz?" Later, Bri

Hi Brian! You're new here, aren't you? I'll come by to visit you. Any friend of AJ's...

Hi There! Last time I bought popcorn and a medium soda (Friday, before seeing "Strangers," I stopped at Dunkins because a breakfast sandwich and iced coffee is HALF THE PRICE of movie food ) it cost me almost $11!!! Add this to a "matinee price," which in my neck of the woods is now 8.25 it was almost 20 dollars for an afternoon at the movies
I don't know how high school and college kids can have "date nights" anymore and actually afford them

And, I have a feeling that the cup is half (or more) filled with ice... well, I won't complain about that part because I like a lot of ice!
reply by sunlight on June 8, 2008 4:19 PM ()
It is amazing how much stale popcorn and watered-down soda can cost!

Hey,hey AJ I heard "Indiana Jones" stinks which I am surprised at with Stephen Spielberg at the helm Next movie I want to see is "Sex and the City." "The Stranger" is EXCELLENT but very scary!! Not really into "Indiana Jones" type movies anyway; the other ones did not impress me either not did the "Star Wars" series. Did like a few of the "Star Trek" movies and like superhero movies like "Batman," and "Incredible Hulk" which I will see both of. I have been thinking of L.A. or Portland, Oregon for a relocation The heat does not bother me; it is the humidity that drive me whacky Today I took a half hour walk, stopped at Starbucks, and went to Barnes and Noble to check out a few books. It was pretty bad and I had a hard time breathing coming back. It is great if you have a car in this weather but when you have to walk places it can be rough Enjoy your evening and stay cool

AJ, there are Republicans everywhere my friend. I know Portland is VERY liberal but is also beautiful, clean and very green I wouldn't feel bad for "The Strangers." Not sure where it came in in terms of "top movies of the week" but the theatre was packed when I went to a 3 PM show on Friday
reply by brian45 on June 8, 2008 4:44 PM ()
I sorta felt bad for the makers of "The Stranger." It's release was really badly planned. It got great reviews, and I have heard wonderful things, but it was released right after two mega-hits, which has to have hurt its ticket sales. If it were released during a softer weekend, I bet it would have captured the number one slot rather than number three.
I hear Portland is a great place to live, though, you might have trouble with the politics there. It is one of the most liberal places in the country to live.

Check it out--we are COOLER with less humidity down here than you are up there--COME ON DOWN!!
Our paper had a front page story on the cost of movie tickets and especially how high concession stand prices are--some of the theatres have instituted a new policy--all tickets $5 on Tuesday--and all theatres have a 'reward' card to get free sodas, popcorn and movies--of course you ahve to spend a lot to get them BUT since I go to the movies at least once a week I do okay with the freebies!
comment by greatmartin on June 8, 2008 1:46 PM ()
What a great idea for the theaters to have! They keep saying people aren't going as much as they used to. I bet it is the price. I would go more often if it were cheaper. Unless I REALLY want to see a movie, I figure I can buy it on DVD for less than it would be for Ray and I to go to the movies to see it once.

The only thing I can do in a heat wave is diet. I just don't feel like eating in that heat. Looking forward to your review.
comment by nittineedles on June 8, 2008 1:41 PM ()
Marg, I am the same way in regards to 'eating in the heat.' Best time of the year to lose weight for me is summertime with extreme humidity every day The best diet I can imagine. LOL. Unfortunately here on the East Coast, I gain at least 10 or more pounds in the winter which is why I must move-aside from other things

I feel the same way about eating during a heat wave!

Such a wuss! It has been in the mid to upper 90's here for the last couple of weeks and will remain there until, I don't know, October?
comment by thepirateinthecity on June 8, 2008 11:38 AM ()
You must have a nice big air conditioned car to get into Pirate Believe me if you had to walk in the humidity you would feel differently.
reply by brian45 on June 8, 2008 4:45 PM ()
I admit it! I am a wuss when it comes to heat. That is why I remain a northerner!
