Paper Announces Candidates on the Ballot

Today's paper had a complete listing of all the local candidates that completed and submitted qualified nomination papers for November's election. The good news is that it confirmed that I did get the required signatures. There are officially 8 candidates, including myself, running for three seats on the school committee. None of this was really news to me, but it was cool to see my name in the paper again.

This weekend I filled out a form that needed to be turned into one of the local papers. It is a form that has all sorts of biographical information so the staff there can be sure that they have all the right information. A lot of it is professional and community based information. The only hard part for me was the marital status thing.

Obviously, I get the point that Ray and I are not married. That is not something that can change any time soon. At the same time, having 10 years together seems like it should get more credit than my putting down that I was single. So, it took a little while for me to sort out what to put down for that section.

I ended up listing Ray as a spouse, but saying that we were not married. The funny thing is that if we were straight, we could claim common law marriage! I put down how long we had been together, but stated that we were not legally married. I figure they can sort out how (and if they ever need) to report it.

I am not sure if I mentioned this, but I did receive a letter telling us that we would not be having a primary. Apparently, there was some question as to whether or not we would need to have one because of the large candidate pool. That is a bit of a relief since it means I can save money on only one session of voting rather than having to spend money on two rounds of voting.

So, things will get a little quieter for a while as people relax a bit on campaigning for the summer.

Edie and I tend to use life partner or, when in conversation, partners in life or partners for life. I do see official notices and announcements in papers that say life companion, special friend, special companion, and "our" choice that I mentioned earlier, life partner.

You must be so excited to see your name in the paper again. It sets a sense of realism to it all, doesn't it?

It is really fun to see my name there in print. It does make it seem so real!
I like the various descriptions you posted of how people describe their relationship.

My sister and her life partner have been together moving up on 50 years.
They are lesbians, but have always used "life partner" to refer to one another. It saves explaining a lot of little things.

I like that. It definitely works. I saw a comic the other day on tv. She was saying how much she hates the term "domestic partner" because she says it makes them sound like they clean houses together! I laugh every time I see the commercial! I do like life partner though.
