Speaking at a School Committee Meeting

The school committee has a special meeting this evening. It was set up so the committee could lay out some goals so the superintendent could focus on as he works toward his next evaluation. It was an interesting session. It gave me a chance to see the dynamics between the various members for the first time in a workshop environment.

As they were talking, they also opened the floor to allow people to speak and comment. For the most part, the audience was made up of union representatives for the teachers. I was the only non-incumbant candidate there, which I thought was kind of sad. We also had one member of the community there.

I did have a few chances to participate in the discussion, and I seemed to get a positive response to what I said both during (based on expressions on faces) and from people talking to me after the meeting so I felt good about it.

One interesting thing I have noticed is that I seem to be falling into an interesting position in relation to the committee itself. Our school committee is divided into two factions, and each of them seems to view me as a potential swing vote that could give their faction a majority vote. I seem to swing back and forth between the two sides, depending on the issue. Perhaps, I could end up being the Sandra Day O'Connor of the group if I am elected!

I think it's important that you attended this meeting. Isn't maybe a good sign when candidates show an interest? And, I think it's good to be a swing voter, too...it's not always good for people to think someone is automatically on their side all the time. Yep, nothing wrong with being a swinger!

You are right. I was really surprised that so few candidates have been going. I think it might be because they assume that it is not a big deal to miss the summer meetings because school is not in session, but a lot was discussed at these meetings.

The most important thing for School Board members to accept is that school text books should be chosen by expetes in the field, and not by representatives with an axe to grind, such as ID.

That is really true! That has happened in some parts of this country.
