Happy and Waiting for Spring!

This week the weather here in Southern Ohio has been to the extremes. Early this week, I was able to spray the first finish coat on wall cabinets I made for our Utility room. Then, the weather got very cold with rain, snow, and winds. Now I will have to be patient and wait for warmer sunny weather, so I can finish those cabinets. I do not have a spray booth in the shop. I am working on a design that will use plastic drapes hanging from the garage door rails, like in the hospital. Then I pl ...

Those Darn Computers!

Last month I had my computer repaired. The repair man had to replace the power supply and mother board. When I got it back, it worked for two weeks and then quit. What the new repair shop found out was that the original Windows shipped with the computer was not activated. I was upset. The original repair was not done properly. The new hardware was not compatible with Windows, and all that he had to do was activate it. I hope this helps someone else, because it has cost me. Being retired, w ...

January Has Been Challenging

We managed to get through the Holidays with lots of glorious times. I had finished all the craft items and started on finishing a project that I started in 2000. My wife wants cabinets over the Laundry. I have them assembled, but the cold weather is preventing me from finishing them. She says that this is an excuse. It is more comfortable in front of the fire watching TV. Ha! I also lost the computer to a power surge and just got it back from repair. Of course, I lost all the files on the ...

Job Hunting Discouraging!

It has been over two months of applications and interviews so far but no takers. I am wondering if, at my age (74) , that it will be almost impossible. I am thinking of just settling for a temp position at near minimum wage and just be satisfied with that. I enjoy working with people, but am not able to volunteer. If I could get by on our present income, I would spend most of my time in my wood-shop making crafts for the family and friends. It has been suggested that I make things to sell, ...

I Am Retiring for Good!

It has been a rocky year. For the last 6 months I have applied for a job that matches my carrer, and had several interviews. No offers. It is a young working world. The only job I may be able to get is part time as a door greater or such. My son has me hooked on selling on E-Bay. In December, I sold 7 items, and made a little money. Ther is one small problem. I was tempted to spend that money and bid on things. I won some and now the money is gone. The wife said that I nedd to stop looking ...

What Next?

Hi, I am currently UN-employed and trying to decide what I can do next. Searching for a job is discouraging. At my age most employers are not hiring. I am faced with a major decision. Do I still want to try to work full time, or should I just be satisfied with my life and be satisfied? There are opportunities out there for temporary or part time work, but the pay is limited. The income at this point is not the real issue. I just feel like I should be contributing somehow, with all the expe ...

Garden Pests a Problem

This year I am trying to control infestation in my garden. So far, I have some blight on the tomato's. They look sick. I do not know what causes this, but I tried spraying. Time will tell if anything comes of it. They are starting to produce, but small fruit only so far. Last year I lost all my squash and cucumber plants. It was a bug burrowing into the stem and laying eggs. The plants all died! This year I moved the planting to try to avoid this. I am spraying. I got a tip from the Intern ...

I Goofed

I am always wanting to reduce weeding as much as possible. The bean patch was being overgrown with weeds. I read that if I shielded the plants, I could spray the weeds with ROUNDUP. Yes, it did kill the weeds, but it severely effected the bean plants. I suppose the fumes or ground water did the damage. Well, I had to replant. I guess, in the future, I will deal with the weeds another way.

Reduce Work Week to Save Gas

I am considering accepting a job 50 miles from home. At the present gas prices, I estimate that it will cost me $12.00 per day. I would like to suggest that employers reduce the number of days for a work week to 4 days @ 10 hours per day. This would save me $50.00 per month. Also, look at the reduction in cost for the employer. With jobs being sent overseas, everyone would save. Why don't we all start letting our employers know how we feel, and accept the fact that we would be able to spen ...
