Thought it was about time I wrote something... I'm back in class after an uplifting and educational internship year at First Lutheran in Milford, IA.
My courses include: "Ecumenical Hymnody", a church music history course that does fulfill an actual requirement of my degree program.
"1st & 2nd Corinthians" - in the Bible division - had to dust off my greek textbooks for this one.
"Jesus the Savior" a theology or 'systematics' course focused on doctrine/dogma about Jesus - how he has been explained by theologians and the church over time, how he functions (theories of salvation, etc). These courses are not always pleasant as we attempt to nail everything down, define & explain everything, and place a heavy emphasis on being right. There's always a tension between owning ideas about what God is doing (why, how) and remaining a bit humbly ignorant and mystified by it as well.
And I'm doing an independent study of discipleship -- how to explain, teach, and advocate discipleship within Lutheran tradition and theology. This is the most fun because it's stuff I want to read and think about, but because it's largely up to me, other classes' deadlines often push this work to the back.
The music class is only a half credit, and ends next week. After that I begin another half credit course on pastoral care to people with mental health problems and their families.
I'll get around to reflecting on the process in general again one of these days, with some updates and reflections about recent developments in my personal life as well -- they're undeniably and inevitably intertwined.
