The advantage of knowing the language when staying in Germany
The success of research stays in Germany also depends on command of the German language. Research fellows whose knowledge of German is insufficient will be granted a language fellowship of up to four months by the AvH's selection committee. This will enable them to attend an intensive language course at a Goethe-Institut or other recognized language school in Germany. The language fellowship falls immediately prior to the actual research fellowship and can neither be interrupted nor taken up during the research fellowship.
As part of the language fellowship programme, the AvH pays the course fees plus the cost of bed and breakfast. To cover other meals and expenses the AvH grants research fellows EUR 610 per month.
On application, language fellowships or language courses may also be granted to spouses of research fellows.
Research fellows and spouses who have not taken advantage of a four-month language fellowship can be granted a subsidy toward the cost of a German language course on application. The language course should as a rule be attended during the first half of the research fellowship. Please inform the language institute that the course is being attended during an AvH research fellowship. Intensive language courses which would lead to an interruption of research work cannot be granted.
