  Hope for Cures?

I rarely do a cut-and-paste article any more, but this one is pretty important. I read this on the Discovery page today. The article is about the leaps and bounds that research is making in wake of the decoding of DNA. It is really important to those with serious diseases or who have loved ones with these diseases. It seems to follow that if they can pinpoint the specific faults in the genes, it would be just another step to finding how to alter the genes so that they could disable the disease. (I just read of a study of autism and the use of DNA to help find a cure. I realize that such cures will take a while to find and test, but there is hope since researchers are making such progress these days.) Here is the beginning of the article and the link to the article:

Quote: Human DNA Discoveries Piling Up

March 31, 2008 -- Scientists are scanning human DNA with a precision and scope once unthinkable and rapidly finding genes linked to cancer, arthritis, diabetes and other diseases.

It's a payoff from a landmark achievement completed five years ago -- the identification of all the building blocks in the human DNA. Follow-up research and leaps in DNA-scanning technology have opened the door to a flood of new reports about genetic links to disease.

On a single day in February, for example, three separate research groups reported finding several genetic variants tied to the risk of getting prostate cancer.

And over the past year or so, scientists have reported similar results for conditions ranging from heart attack to multiple sclerosis to gallstones. The list even includes restless legs syndrome, a twitching condition best known as "jimmy legs" in an episode of "Seinfeld."

Interviews with scientists at the center of this revolution and a review of published studies over the past six months make clear the rapid adoption of the new technology and the high expectations for it. /End Quote

This is not the article I planned yesterday. It's much more important!

Wonderful! Wish we didn't have to wait, but it's being done quite quickly these days! I read the other articles and it's amazing!

Really good stuff. Really good to know! Thanks

Yes, Deb, it is great to know!

Excellent post, Sunny! Since diabetes took both my father and grandfather from me, I would LOVE to see this disease wiped out, along with others that are talked about here.
It's amazing the strides that are being made!

Jim, we hope that these things will come to fruition soon! So many people out there suffering. Think of how many would sigh a breath of relief if they didn't have to worry or if there were a cure for something that is affecting their lives so adversely! I know it would do my heart good!

Scientist David Hamilton...
"I have found around 500 scientific papers from mainstream academic journals which directly talk about the effect that thought, feeling and faith have on the body's systems," he says.

Recent research into spontaneous remissions from cancer found that a radical change of belief system seemed to be a common factor. While few would argue with the idea that a good attitude can speed the healing process, Hamilton believes emotions, such as happiness, can change DNA.

What is surprising is that a growing body of scientific thought appears to agree with him.

As an example, Hamilton quotes the work of Eric Kandel, joint winner of the 2000 Nobel prize for medicine, who carried out pioneering work into the way genes can be switched on or off by social influences.

"There is a whole branch of medicine called psycho-neuro-immunology, which studies the effect of thoughts and emotions on our biochemistry. The biochemistry is intimately connected with the DNA, so if these biologichemical components are affected by thoughts and emotions then thoughts and emotions must also affect our DNA."
"I wrote the book to give scientific credibility to what most people already know," he says. "The most powerful cure for anything is faith, hope and determination."

This is a really hope giving thought! Imagine if we could harness the power of the mind and heart to cure our DNA faults!!!

People just have to pay attention to this and there are many diseases that could be eradicated. No one wants to bring a child into the world who is going to suffer.

It is going like wildfire! Soon there may be not as much suffering by children because they can be cured or the diseases may be prevented altogether! As I said, it will probably take a little time, though.

it is just amazing what they are finding out. but it also reminds me of science fiction movies, where they don't allow people with diseases to be born.

Ah, yes, but with DNA results and cures, there would never be a reason to take such drastic measures!

This is such a fascinating biological breakthrough! I am awaiting the results of my d.n.a. which I sent for recently. It shows just who, my ancestors were since the last ice-age (at least which groups of peoples - not the individuals)

For sure, I will be doing it

How very exciting that you've had a DNA test! Maybe you could do a blog when you get your results... Well, you definitely SHOULD do a blog about it!

I read this just today. Very interesting. If you like pecansyou may like cashews too.

I love cashews! They're my favorite, just even with pecans!

I am healthy now, but I'm also worry about disease. It's unpredictable
comment by mustakim on Mar 31, 2008 5:00 PM ()
You know, Must. This is one reason to get genetic testing (once it becomes affordable). You can find out about the diseases that your genes carry and something can be done about it.
