  Adios You Pest

YEA! I mean 'yea' because I don't want to sound too happy about that damnable Gustav moving west far enough to go into Louisiana--the Mississippi Gulf Coast took a glancing blow. I was waiting for the worst, but the lights didn't go out, no trees went down, so by midnight last night I thought "Good, I can relax."

That's when the feeder bands (those long streamers of clouds that swirl on the periphery of the eye) started causing tornado's and flooding rains, so all day that's all the news has been about here. I am sick of that storm; sick of reading about it, hearing about it and seeing it on TV. Can I be honest? It was a kinda puny storm hyped up by the media; a pest a destructive annoyance that scared everybody sh*tless--BUT it was good training for all the emergency services, which is good.

I cooked up meats in the freezer not wanting them to thaw and go to waste. Barometric pressure changes--or something-caused my cooking skills to improve. I made the best steak with onion gravy I have ever made. I made the best meat loaf ever. I ate good while my nerves were up!

Last night there were some hard gusts of wind and rain. I heard a loud crash outside on the carport. I went out to find the trashcan where I had a rake, a hoe, and other tools standing up in had toppled over. I was standing it all up again when I noticed a bird huddled on the eave under the carport--it didn't want to go out in the bad weather--not even the racket made it move. I hurried up and went in and turned off the light. I feel sorry for the birds--I wish I had a refuge for all of them.    susil

Glad that your alright. I tried to reach mom again last night, but couldn't get thru. Phone lines are screwy on a good day with that crazy phone company they got, so I'll try again tonight. Haven't gotten any rain here at all.

Hi elfie; I was sure y'all wou;d get some rain up there--
oh well, maybe with the next one that comes down the pike.

Because of you, I was watching Gustov's path. I'm happy it missed you.

Me too, sol!

If Gustav had veered rightward it would have inundated NOLA again and those people bitching about the evacuation would have been thankful they left. They should fill NOLA with dirt and move the city to Tennessee, where Grumpy and Elfie could catch beads.

jon, the wetlands should be let to return to their natural state
and New Orleans vacated--it's coming to that if global warming
raises sea levels much.

Dear Susil, happy it was not a disaster. I too wonder where the animals go. My b.i.l. rescued a dove during Charley, put it in a cage with his cockateils (sp?) let it go when the weather cleared. But domestic animals are also at risk if they are caught outside. My cats are indoor critters. A boat goes by, they'll run into the house from the pool deck. Wimps. But it means they won't run out when I open the outside door. It's a big world out there, they meow.

teal, you've got some smart kitties-- They know it's a
dangerous world out there!
Hope you are better (PS you wrote in a blog about cherry jam
and that stuck in my mind, so I bought a jar of Smucker's
cherry preserves, and love it--you started something!)

Glad you are well Sue,also everyone else I think.
About midnight last night it started blowing (I am guessing
about 30 to 40 MPH winds) and torential rains. It rained
the biggest part of the next 12 to 14 hours. My pond overflowed
and almost got to the house. Never seen it that high before.
Thank God no one got hurt in this area that I know of.
I didn't go into my frozen foods, just made sure that I had
gas for the generator. Hope all the rain bands are gone. Like
you, I am tired of hearing and seeing it on TV.
Good night, Larry

Hi larry; glad you made it okay--I know we needed the rain, and
by now everything has soaked up. I don't have a generator but anyone
with freezers need one. After Katrina, my cousin in H'burg lost
almost everything in two chest type freezers--corn and peas and
all that garden produce. It literally made her sick to lose all
that work. She has a generator now.

I worry that it will be a matter of crying wolf and people will get numb to the alerts and ignore a big one. How many times can the mayor of New Orleans convince us that the next one is 'the storm of the century?'
comment by troutbend on Sept 2, 2008 7:09 PM ()
You have pinpointed exactly what will happen--hundreds of
people who evacuated this time won't listen when the Big One
is really coming.
reply by susil on Sept 7, 2008 11:14 AM ()
I'm just so glad and relieved you and your property are okay. I had prayer candles burning and fans blowing in my 90 degree weather. I know there may be a tendency to say the powers that be overreacted, but if the storm had hit just 40-50 miles east, and hadn't weakened at the last moment, it all would have been so much worse. Now everyone in shelters needs to get home, and we can be glad your area dodged the big one. Whew....
P.S. Glad to hear your tummy is happy!
comment by marta on Sept 2, 2008 6:59 PM ()
marta, you are so dear--thanks for the good karma and candles!
Well, now that Ray Nagin the mayor of New Orleans has given the go
ahead for evacuees to return, there are people in shelters in H'burg
who say they don't have the money to buy a tank of gas to go home--
it has caused some cynical reactions from the public.

Glad you and your house came out of it intact!

Hi Hawaii, how are you? Tx for visiting!
reply by susil on Sept 7, 2008 11:29 AM ()
The H, I, and J storms are already on the map. We'll get Hanna up north after it makes landfall somewhere around Georgia or NC. Then, Ike will be where Hanna is now, then Jeanie, ugh...very active season!
comment by jjoohhnn on Sept 2, 2008 4:17 PM ()
Hi jj; Looks like every year from now on, the season for storms will
be more intense..If I weren't a creaky old geezerette, I'd move--but
where? Don't want earthquake country, tornado alley country, winter
blizzard country, etc. I loved New Mexico--wish I'd moved there long
ago.
