  Cut off at the Knees

Last night I watched a re-run of a CNN show "Out Of Gas," predicated on this scenario: What if a category 5 hurricane destroyed the oil refineries on the southern coasts of the USA, and the Taliban saw an opportunity to bomb the oil producing wells in Saudi, thereby making this country vulnerable to attack? No gas, and this country comes to a screeching halt.

Well, here's one better, and I hope homeland security and the CIA and the FBI and all those incompetents in Washington have thought of: Enemies taking out our electrical plants.

I can tell you from first hand experience, when Katrina took down the power lines, all normal life came to an abrupt, precipitous, sudden, rude, slamming stop. If a gas station had gas, without electricity, it couldn't be pumped. Banks, offices, stores, the water plant; everything was dead as a doornail. People were paralyzed. If you think we've become dependent on gas, HA! Try making do one day without electricity.

At night the ruined earth was silent and dark; without light pollution, stars blazed in the hot summer sky. The light from a flashlight was precious and wonderful. People who could obtain generators hooked up and could at least have fans. But we were cut off at the knees without electricity.  If an enemy really wants to harm us, cut off the power. Susil

I avoid all disaster movies. I know I am living with my head in a sandbag. It gets me through the day. xx, T.

Hi teal; I've gotten where I don't watch much news anymore and
feel much better not doing so!

very true. They really need to end their dependency on gas & normal electrcity ( they should try wind & solar more..especially in AZ and HI)
comment by panthurdreams on June 23, 2008 4:50 PM ()
Hawaii, wind and solar power oughta work great where you are.
That's one state where it should be tried for certain..

Our oil dependency is a national emergency, even with our Strategic Oil Reserve. The power grid and infrastructure in this country has been in such a sorry state for a long time. We all have to practice conservation, of course, and push to expand our alternate energy resources. Katrina and the price of oil has awakened everyone, everyone with a brain that is....

Hi marta; I'm taking a clue from my friend Christy and
not listening to the news as much as I once did because it's
all so disheartening.I heard an oil exec on the the radio this
am saying even if offshore drilling were approved today, it would
take 10 years between beginning drilling and gas showing up
for sale.
Hope you are feeling well, marta.

I agree! We wouldn't be able to blog for long without power. And I'm on a well so I have no water without power. On the other hand, it would be lovely to see the stars from my driveway.

Hi Karen; I had forgotten how brilliant and how many stars
were visible without any light occluding them--that was
great!

That's a scary thought. But, you are right. I have seen more than once what a storm does to people when the power goes down over a wide area.
comment by redimpala on June 22, 2008 7:22 PM ()
Hi impala; Being without power was bad--I missed blogging
and taking a shower most of all!

scary to think about

Hi ducky, it seems like the older I get, the more
scardey cat I get over things that used to not bother me.

Don't give them any ideas! They have us by the throat now.

Hi peach; I reckon those people have thought about
things we haven't even considered yet. That sounds
paranoid, doesn't it?
reply by susil on June 23, 2008 3:55 PM ()
I watched part of it.It was too depressing to watch the entire program.I see a very dramatic change in the future of our world. Not a good change but a very scarey one...........Laurie

Hi dogs; you are right--our grandkids may have a tough time.
I sincerely hope things improve.

My power went off for a couple of hours one summer, and you're right, it's a very startling discovery how reliant we are upon it. One of our goals is to get a generator here because if there was a forest fire we would need to be able to pump water to spray on the houses.
comment by troutbend on June 22, 2008 12:47 PM ()
Hi Laura; you really need a generator for the reason you mentioned.
Good idea to have one around.
reply by susil on June 23, 2008 3:15 PM ()
I have a gen for the house, but it's only useful while the fuel holds out. I have potable water on the RV, but once used, it can't be replaced without electric to run the water pump. Sometimes we don't realize how good we have it in this country with power 24/7. There are many parts of the world without electric, or with electric that is available periodically.
comment by jjoohhnn on June 22, 2008 8:31 AM ()
Hi jj; I didn't have electricity for two weeks--My power company,
Singing River EPA, had crews come from all over the United States
helping get trees off the lines and poles back up. Like everyone else,
I am spoiled spoiled to always expect the power to be on.
Without electricity we were back to primitive conditions. After three
days, I ran out of water. I will never let that happen again.

Scary thought!
comment by greeneyedgemini on June 22, 2008 8:28 AM ()
Hi green eyes; yes, and I don't think I've given any ideas
to enemies of this country they haven't already thought of.
