  Fish Camp

Yesterday after PT I picked up my cousin Ellie and drove to Lucedale. We ate at a fish camp. (This is what catfish restaurants are called in the deep south.)  These establishments are only open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.

The Rocky Creek catfish place has rockers on the front porch and an American flag flying out front. The parking lot was crowded. There's a Baptist church across the road and beautiful farmland all around, green with soybeans and cotton. Neat houses nestle among the fields.

The interior of the catfish restaurant is paneled with cypress, a honey colored wood with small knotty whorls. There's antique kitsch on the walls--old Coca Cola signs, etc.   There's also an oxen yoke; mounted deer heads; and a wild boar's head from a hog killed in the Chickasawhay River swamp.

The menu is catfish, whole or fillets, coated with cornmeal and fried in peanut oil, sweet coleslaw, hushpuppies, and french fries. Slices of white onion and lemon on request, and sweet tea. That's it. No desserts are served at these places. They bring you all you can eat then you go home and sleep it off.

Deep south Mississippi is the only place where this menu is done to perfection, a regional specialty.

Bye y'all, daybreak has come. Susil

So jealous. One time we were headed for the throwed rolls place in Sikeston, MO and got sidetracked by the Ozark Catfish Buffet. Sweet coleslaw and sweet tea are also big favorites of ours. Darn! We need to go on a road trip!

Wow, that sounds heavenly. I don't like fish at all, but I might be willing to try it now.

I am sure David would love it but I am not much of a fish eater.

Hi Hawaii; catfish and a tuna sandwich now and then are the
only fish I consume. (The name catfish turns people off, which
is too bad.)

Hmmmmm....

PS marta--the catfish are fresh water, pond raised, sweet
delicate flavor--not at all like ocean fish which I don't
like because they have a strong flavor.

Hi marta, bet you'd like those thin crispy fillets--not
"fishy" tasting at all.

You're talking rampant calories Susil. I'll pass.

Hi teal; I guess that's why I feel so comfortable down here--
so many "plump-etts" to keep me company!

Hi Tennessee; When I lived in Texas, fish camp cuisine is what
I missed the most--girl you gotta go soon! I can hear your stomach
rumbling..
