  Giddy

Dottie phoned and said she wants to drive across multi-states to go to the great American yard sale. It starts in Gasden (I hope I spelled that right) Alabama and winds through several states. I don't know where it ends up.

Now, a couple of weeks ago Dottie saw a psychiatrist who took her off her anti-anxiety medication and put her on some new pill. This medication makes her sound like she's high--really high. Giddy. So here she is wanting to make this long drive at the hottest time of the year to buy things she can't afford and has no room in her house to put what she buys.

Dottie is a pack rat.  Every nook and cranny of her house is stuffed to the gills with stuff. She has a storage locker--also stuffed. Me, the perennial naysayer, said Dottie, gas is so high, it's so hot out and you have a metal cage in your back holding your spine up, you're gonna have to pay for a motel room every night and eat out every day--this is gonna be expensive.

Dottie says she'll get a sleeping bag and sleep in back of the truck (she's using her son's pickup.)  Now I know she's lost it. Dottie is a big big woman who has trouble sleeping comfortably in her own bed--now she saying the back of a pickup in 100 degree heat--a woman who keeps her house cold as a meat locker.

I know Dottie like a book. My diagnosis: she has problems and wants to flee, to go somewhere, to get away, and this new medication is giving her flights of fancy. But a multi state yard sale? Oh well..Mmmm....Wonder if I could go with her?  Susil

You and Ed should travel together. He has tunnel vision, stops for very little. Makes ME go to the fast-food place for the vittles while he naps in the car. Won't stretch his legs unless I threaten him, etc., etc.
Get back with the food and can't sit and eat it because he has started the car and we are on our way. Years ago Sophie (my venerable teacher) said wouldn't it be fun if I would go with her on one of her overseas trips. I was thinking, right, traveling companion from hell. I loved her dearly but 19th century Viennese mores and strict rules of behavior would have made me crazy. After a couple of hours with her during the lesson and chitchat I wanted, sometimes, to go home and slash my wrists. And yet I loved her.

Isn't it strange that we can like someone so much, but can't
take too much of their company? I know what you mean there!
Well, like Ed, I feel if you're going somewhere for a purpose,
then you oughta get on the road and not lollygag around. But
thinking about it, even the few times I've been on vacation,
I liked to get where I was going with as few stops as possible.
Must be a Type A thing.

Sounds like she wants to escape, but I think I'd choose something more fun. Vegas maybe??

Hi she--that's more to my taste!

I'm not sure I could handle the heat this time of year. It's awful out there..105 heat index and higher. We had a big 30 mile yard sale in October...maybe you could put her off till then and come up this way..LOL

Hi elfie; I just found out the great American yard sale
ends up in Ohio. But heat in the triple digits? No way Jose
am I gonna be out in that. (I did tell Dottie "If you want to take
a trip go up to Tennessee where it's so beautiful and cooler.")
Ha Ha--I didn't know you were as hot there as here!

Tx sol; hope you are well!

It would probably be a drag and a lot of responsibility, but maybe someone should go with her.

Hi larry; nope, this is a trip Dottie will take by herself.
It might not be bad if it were the fall of the year--but
sleeping in the back of a pickup is not on my agenda any
time!

This sounds like what I want to do with my fantasy road trip, and just about as practical. I was thinking maybe it would be fun if I could find someone to go with me (Mr. Tbend's not interested) but then I realize a lot of people get on my nerves so I would have to audition them. He says maybe next year.

You are so right about the audition thing! Several years ago
I rode with Dottie from Mississippi as far as San Antonio Texas.
(Dottie was headed on to Arizona.)So the whole time she played
loud country western music, and sang along with the radio, and
stopped every 100 miles to pee and eat and drink. (I like to get
in the car and go to where I'm going as quickly as possible with
as few stops as possible.) Never Again will I ride with Dottie!

Of course, you COULD go, and I can imagine one blog post after another relating the event from your wonderful witty perspective, but do you really want to put yourself through all that travel drama with Dottie? I know you have a good head on your shoulders, but you just might lose your mind....

Hi marta; I was kidding about going with Dottie--I
know better--been there, done that. (I explained it
all to troutbend.) Dottie does this slow stop and go
traveling that makes me pull my hair out!
