  Tin Roof

It's been raining every afternoon and I can hear the drops ping and splatter on top of the window air conditioner outside my bedroom. There is something so cozy and pleasant about that sound.

I was raised in a shack with a tin roof,  back in those days when the weather wasn't screwed up like it is now--then we actually had a Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, not all melded into one another like now.
Summer mornings out in the garden patch were as humid and hot as a sauna, but we'd be out in the heat barefoot and hatless, sweating buckets, picking butterbeans and peas and other produce.

Then every afternoon huge boiling thunderheads formed, blue black with rain . It would rain hard, beating down on that tin roof, a sound I love. It would cool things off a little, and by late afternoon the sun would come out again. It was like a jungle. Everything grew lush and green  from the heat and rain.

Nowadays , there are long periods of drought and you can't count on rain to come in its season. But when the rains do fall, I wish I had a tin roof overhead.   Susil

I hear the rain on the metal vent over the stove. It's not the
same. But I love looking at it falling on the bay. The water turns a deep gray and gets very choppy. Better than a movie.

teal, seeing rain fall on the bay must be a beautiful sight
for sure..I watched a thunderstorm out over the Gulf once and
never forgot how awesome it was.

My grandmother's house had a tin roof and I love the sound of the rain hitting it..I don't think that there is a sound anywhere as good. What great memories.

elfie I've gotta look for one of those white noise tapes, or
relaxation tapes or whatever they're called that has half an
hour of nothing but rain on a tin roof. My granny had a tin roof
too.

We're going to build a small patio area off of your detached garage next summer and we're putting a tin roof on it. Can't wait!

How I envy you! You're going to love that!

I live on the top floor of my apartment building and just above my windows is an overhang with a rain gutter, which makes a lovely noise when the rain hits it. I like the sound of falling rain, too. Some folks are replacing their shingled roofs with steel roofs. I wonder if those roofs make a noise like the tin roofs in your memory.

marta; I'll have to ask someone with a metal roof if they can
hear the rain. There may be so much insulation it muffles the
sound, unlike the old days when the tin roof was right overhead
nailed on the roof. Hope you are well and getting regilar rain!
