The Reason I Haven't Been Around for 24 Hours

The craziest thing happened yesterday, my son looked up in our family room and there were about 10 honey bees hanging out from the molding around ceiling. We managed to fight those off. Then we noticed they were coming out of the lighting fixture outside by our sliding glass door. Now we have a huge screened in area with a pool, so this was weird. We sprayed everything down, although I hated killing honey bees. We kept looking for the source of the bees and hubby went outside and around the front of the house. There were three small holes in our wall, that weren't there before and bees were flying in and out of them. We can hear buzzing slightly in one wall. It is freaky.

Hubby called the fire department and they referred us to a beekeeper who is coming here to try to gather them and bring them back to his own hives. This is the craziest thing I've ever experienced. I keep worrying about taking my dogs out that they'll get stung, but the guy reassures us that they won't sting unless they feel threatened. So, we're trying not threaten them for sure. Anyway, I'll keep you updated.

This happened to us in a brick house several years ago. The beekeepers said we had no choice but to kill the bees because they couldn't get into the wall to get them out. Had to do something - they were coming into our house through the light fixtures and chewing holes into the drywall to get into the house. Initially we stood outside and used a vacuum cleaner to suck up the bees as they went in and out of the hole in the side of the house.

Wow! That is kind of freaky. I am glad none of you were stung. That could have bene really bad!

I'm glad you're having that taken care of with as little damage to the bees as possible. Keep us posted.

Isn't he cute! I'm still waiting for the beekeeper. He's supposed to be here about 3:00 p.m.

I've never had anything like this happen with honeybees, just dirtdobbers and wasps.

That is cool that you are getting a beekeeper to come in to save them... but YIKES!

Glad you called a beekeeper. They are like magicians. We need to save our precious bees! Good luck!

I can't wait to see what happens.

I've seen that happen in the car in the parking lot at the hospital. They called the beekeeper for that one too, he got the queen out or something.
How are you going besides that? My sister that lives close to you has her house up for sale and will be leaving to move to North Carolina.
comment by cindy on July 14, 2008 7:39 AM ()
Hopefully this is what this guy will do.
reply by teacherwoman on July 14, 2008 10:06 AM ()
Yup, the guy is right. All he needs to do (easy for me to say) is find the queen and the workers will follow. With the devastation affecting honey bees, it would be really good if they can be saved.

That's what my hubby says. He said something about 60% of all honeybees are dying???? Wow! That's horrible.

Maybe they came looking for you--the sweetest thing in town.

My aunt had honey bees in her house - didn't know it, until the ceiling in her bathroom fell in from the weight of the home. It was one "sweet mess". Hope you found yours before they did too much damage. Save me some of the honey comb. I love to chew it. Nena

I hope they haven't had a chance to build a big honey hive in my wall!
