Mandatory Evacuations In Southeast Texas
Source: Stuart Boslow/KTVT / KTXA In the region where Hurricane Rita swamped the flat marshland and homes with several feet of water three years ago, few people waited around for Hurricane Gustav or even the mandatory evacuation that began at 6 a.m. Sunday.

I was watching the news and some lady in Louisiana said she was going to stay. I forget what town it was. It wasn't New Orleans but, it was one of those towns that had been given the mandatory evacuation. She had her broom to sweep the water out of her home!! For crying out loud lady you may not be alive to sweep any water out of your home!! At least most folks have heeded the warning and have gotten out. Thank God they have Gov. Jindal who has handled things a LOT differently than Gov. Blanco during Katrina. He along with a better prepared FEMA director and staff I believe have their act together. Seems Jindal told Nagin just how it was going to go down and started preparations for evacuees to leave as of last Thursday. He has had planes, trains, and buses. So, if someone doesn't leave it isn't because they didn't have a way out.

I just watched an interview of a man and his family who are at Galveston beach vacationing. He said that he had promised his kids they would go this weekend so, they did. And if they see people running then they will too. Good grief man it will be too late!! I would have told the kids there is a MAJOR HURRICANE coming we will go another time. Doesn't he realize that they will shut the causeway down and he will be stuck there on the island. Dang people!! We lived 8 miles from Galveston Bay for two years and fortunately didn't have to even go through a tropical storm. But, I can tell you if we were still living down there we would have left a couple of days ago. My gosh there are shelters all over our state that have opened up and prepared for people. There is NO REASON TO STAY and play your game with Gustav because he will win not you!!!!

Right now it is a crapshoot as to who will be spared, because the eye has not yet made landfall and predicting is not an exact science. All those who were ordered to evacuate should have, and those who stay have no one to blame but themselves for their losses. You are right on; Gustav is not one to play with. (And it is too bad that Katrina had to teach that lesson in such a costly way, and I'm not talking about money either. (Sorry about that short rant. Like many, this hurricane weighs heavily on my mind.)

Hey if they are to stupid to leave then they deserve what they get.

Wow!!

I, too, am so worried for people in the path of this bad storm. I hope they will put safety first and flee to shelter. It is nothing to mess with, as proven by Katrina, and that storm's damage is far from repaired!

Very true Martha!!

Fools. They have no idea. Anyone who stays and thinks they can "weather it out" in a Category 4 or 5 'cane is a corpse already. Katrina claimed about 1600 folks who didn't take the hint and flee.

You are so right Jon!! I was just reading up on the 1900 Galveston Hurricane which is still the deadliest in our history with killing anywhere from 6,000 to 8,000 people and it was a Cat. 4 with winds of 140 mph they estimated when it made land fall on Galveston! http://www.1900storm.com/facts.lasso Scary, scary stuff!!

They sure must!! How are things there? I noticed on the weather channel that the outer bands are reaching well into Florida and into Houston!!
