  Learning About Moose

I've been sitting around heavily medicated, and decided I wanted to have some awake time. Skipped the pain meds, hurt a lot, but I got to go explore the web to learn about Moose. Big Bull Moose, to be precise. Being a city kid, never having traveled in Alaska, I've never been face to face with a Moose except at a zoo. Recently there were Twin Moose born at a zoo somewhere, and their legs seemed to go on forever, their feet were humongous. Found out that the males, "Bull Moose" are huge. Someone pointed me at a photo of a moose Bigger than my Ford Windstar Van, which carries my scooter around for me. Sure enough that's him, courtesy of Alaska Photos, shot in the Denali Park area, where the big mountain lives, in a parking lot. Talk about perspective! Wow!

There are people who grow up in Alaska with Moose out in the back yard, eating the garden. Believe it or not, Moose are the biggest member of the deer family! Oh, and there are people who feed their families all year on a moose. More gamey than Bambi, I'm told, but it will last all year with a few days of work, cleaning and butchering it, and the families get together and buy or rent great big freezer lockers. One moose for many families. That's my story about the moose. Same word for one or a whole herd. Moose. Bullwinkle was way tiny, as moose go.

Dr. Foot Doctor is talking about me having my left foot and ankle fused in one position. the bright spot is that I will get to walk, the silly part is I will walk like Lurch. The worst possible scenario is I could end up with an amputated foot. Hmmmm. Something to think about. Something to pray about. I'd be powerful grateful if all you-all would pray for right decision making as I go about gathering information.
Cheers, Stephy

Stephy, there's someone on this site -- I think it's Kelli (Hopefields) that used to live in Alaska. I think she's had personal experience with moose.

About your answer to Clovis: I think we do whatever it takes to get us through. I do believe what you said, that we are all connected to each other. This was part of Carl Jung's theory of the collective unconscious. If it were my foot, I certainly would be apprehensive... that is a scarey thought... I do like your thought processes (Imagine it's your penis... I think that really brings it home to guys.)

I don't recall seeing one single moose here in the hills of North Georgia. However, that doesn't mean there aren't a few hiding among the moonshine stills and mountain folk.

We see a moose here in N. Colorado about once a summer. Their long legs are the most striking thing about them - you feel like they could take off like a rocket and cover some ground, hopefully not while chasing someone.

That is one handsome moose! I think he (or one of his ancestors) must have been the basis for the ol' Fifties saying: Neat as a moose!

Stephy, you know prayer is completely ineffectual, it's been proven. Moose are apparently somewhat dangerous in the wild. I think it is a good idea to do something with that foot, after all, as you wrote in 50 questions, your ankle keeps falling off it. if you have it amputated, there are excellent prosthetics now so you can walk again easily without even lurching. You might have the vocabulary of a pirate, but there's no need to have the peg leg as well - go modern.

Clovis, there is a Great Power Within Us All, that some people choose to call gumption, some call grit, others a queasy feeling in their interior. Some people call that God. I call it Goddess, usually, but definitely a Higher Power of some kind. We all connect to each other and the universe with that Great Power Within. Some of us call it being connected, some of us call it the Communion of Saints, some call it the ancestors, others, the Phone Company. You don't have to believe it or not, because it's there for everyone, whether they notice it or not. If you choose to connect to it, you will be. If you choose to be a solitaire, well, they have higher powers to. Blessed Be.

As for the foot thing, well, I'm a wee bit scared still. I'm entitled. Approaching a problem which could result in the amputation of a body part is kinda scary. Imagine it's your penis. There. Now you know what I mean.
