Hey All. So I thought with my second post I would talk about working in Calgary. For those of you who don't know, I work for a company called Amec. They are a huge engineering company with offices all over the world. The main office in Calgary is located in a huge skyscraper in the Calgary downtown core, called Amec place. However, I don't work there. I work in a small office across from the Chinook centre (big mall) called MacLeod Place. My office faces north and east, so I see some fantastic sunrises.
I have to start work every day at 7:30 am, so that means I have to get up every morning at 6 am. I walk to work every day and that takes 15 minutes, which is nice. My division is called HSE or Health, Safety and the Environment and we are involved with the Albion Oil Sands Expansion. My job is to scan about 5000 documents, crop them, and then post them in a database. However, it sounds like I am going to get more training as I work there so I'll get to do more stuff in time. Right now its a fantastic learning experience cause I get to listen to all these engineers talk shop, and I look at a lot of P&IDs (Process and instrumentation diagrams).
Just about everybody who works in my office is either British or Australian, which is neat. So far as I know, I'm the only female on our floor, which is also neat. The first day of work I had a 3 hour orientation meeting. It was very very long. Then when I got to my office I had to complete another batch of online stuff about ethics. Some of the videos of unethical practices were actually pretty funny. The awesome part about my office is they have a kitchen where I can get free tea/coffee/hot chocolate. Sweet.
Yesterday night I got invited to go out for curry with my boss and some of my colleagues at work. That was a lot of fun. We went to a new restaurant in the far NE called Nirvana. It had only been open since Friday. We were the only people in the restaurant and were served personally by the manager. It was probably the best indian food I've ever eaten. I was regretting it a bit the next day though. Wooooo.
Monday and Tuesday I'll be at meetings in downtown Calgary all day. I'll be going as an observer and it should be fairly interesting.
Tonight my apartment complex had a potluck dinner for all the residents. I've only met like 3 of them before so both myself and my mom attended. We made bacon wrapped sirloin chunks. The only problem with the potluck is that not very many people my age (none) were there. I'm not meeting anybody my own age in Calgary, which is slightly lonesome. I'm sure once I get settled and join some interesting groups (anime, etc) that I'll meet some people.
Anyways, I'll post again when something interesting happens.
Cheers,
Amber
