I don't know why people know longer seem to be using the short "a". This is the "a" sound in cat, hat, bat, and used to be in Carrie, Harry, marry, and so on. Now Carrie has become Car-ee (as in the automobile), Harry seems to be more often, "Hairy". We no longer get "married", now we get "merried".
We need to save the short "a" from oblivion or soon we won't be able to tell the difference between a "bat" and a "bet" (with my apologies to Pete Rose).
