  Fishing Wars

While we were out of town, according to the fishing club, some fishermen from the club came here to fish but there was already a couple of other fishermen here who told them they were staying in the rental cabin and I told them they could fish the river. So the club guys left and complained to the fishing club about it and got their money back plus a free day fishing.

The problem is that there wasn't anyone staying at the cabins while we were gone, so this was a lie and we don't know who these poaching fishermen could have been. I figure it was someone who had been here before in order to have some idea of how things work around here.

Today I was talking to one of the fishing guides about it and he immediately named another guide whom he has grown to expect that kind of behavior from, so at least I have the make of the guy's truck to keep an eye out for. But without more clues, we'll probably never know for sure who it was.

We also talked about what I refer to as Greedy Yuppie Fishing. Last year a certain professional basketball player and his partner offered me $15,000 to dump my current fishing club and sign with theirs. They were going to stock the river to make easier fishing for their clients, and charge exorbitant membership fees and dues - $60,000 to join, $15,000 a year to belong, plus daily rod fees in the hundreds of dollars.

He told me that they had bragged that they were going to have a property up the Big Thompson even before I had signed up with them. So typical of the way they acted - pushy and arrogant.

I wasn't interested in signing up with them because I didn't want the river stocked (it might even be illegal here), and I thought the kind of customers who came would be more demanding and too elitist.

The way today's guide referred to it, my current fishing club is much more reasonable and accessible to the 'little guy.' It's all relative.

I don't fish, but after seeing those pics I just might wanna make a trip up there! Should I pick up some gear on the way or can I rent from you?

No wonder others want to mooch in on the place, it really does look nice and you obviously have a good thing going there. I'm proud of you for holding your own and not giving in to the wishes of others.

The fly shops in the area rent the fly fishing gear to people. It's quite an investment to buy all this specialized stuff. We don't fish (don't need an excuse to spend time here) so we don't have equipment. I wouldn't have the patience to mess with those little tiny flies, and I was watching someone have a lesson - more than I feel like learning. You're always welcome to come for a visit, but don't expect to be entertained extensively because we have a lot going on all the time. There is always TV!

Be careful with the photos: You're gonna have all your blogging friends wanting to visit. Strange happenings on the Big Thompson.
