Is it an Otter? No, It's a Mink.

We put some smoked turkey skin out on the riverbank today and the mink showed up right away to eat it. This is the first good look we've had at it, and it's not terribly afraid of us when it is intent on eating.

Minks eat small rodents. So at one point while it was eating one of the ground squirrels came along. The mink chased it toward me and they ran between my feet. I had visions of ankle biting so gave a yelp and jumped aside. There was a squeak from either the mink or its prey after they got past me, then the mink ran back to the food, not quite straight at me. Here is a blurry photo of it while I was still scared.

We are glad to see it and that it is not a river otter because fish are not the main diet for minks - they also eat rodents and snakes and sometimes birds. Very exciting.

What I've heard about minks is that they are disagreeable
little critters. I am fond of squirrels. Are they a real
nuisance?

The ground squirrels and chipmunks get into the walls and ceilings of the houses and chew on electrical wiring, which can cause fires, plus they poop and pee everywhere. They can also get into car engines and chew on the wiring and hoses. Also, they are digging tunnels in all our lawns and roadways. We welcome any animal that can make a dent in the number of these pests around here.

Great pics, Laura! I think I read that minks are the most predatory animals. Did you feel his fur when be ran by? I'll bet it wasn't as soft as the coats are.

You're right - they are predatory and vicious. We are hoping it will leave the rabbits and fish alone and go after mice and ground squirrels. The fur really looks nice, and maybe next time one runs at me, I'll think to try to touch it (whilst avoiding the sharp little teeth).

Very very good pictures. Are minks rodents?
comment by elderjane on July 21, 2008 3:31 PM ()
They are weasels, which is different. Rodents have little bucky beaver teeth and weasels have little sharp teeth like cats a little bit. Rabbits are neither one - they are lagomorphs with two rows of teeth (this from Mr. Tbend who is a fountain of trivia).

Thanks - this guy seems to love turkey! and doesn't care if he sees us watching him eat. Kind of like a friendly little pet.

I don't think have ever seen a mink outside of a cage before. How cool

It really is! Somehow it seems less scary when its fur is so pretty.
