  End of Summer

The trees are starting to turn yellow, but the river remains high. We've only had one good fishing month this summer, so our income for the summer is down by a couple thousand dollars. I suppose the fish are enjoying the vacation, and the absence of people on the river has probably encouraged the wildlife - the mink, the osprey, and so on. So on second thought the fish are getting eaten instead of being caught and released.

It has been an unusually mild fall, and we have not had a hard or even a soft frost yet. One chore that has to be done before it gets that cold is to drain the sprinkler system including the pump that draws water out of the Big Thompson River.

This was taken last year when the river was much lower.

We need to connect an air compressor to the sprinkler system and blow all the water out of the pipes and the pump so they don't freeze over the winter. There is about an acre of land under irrigation, so lots of pipes and sprinkler heads criss cross over the property.

Connecting to the air compressor requires several pieces that screw together to increase the diameter and then attach to the female end of a garden hose. For some reason this year there is a part missing that is needed to make the connection.

I emailed photos of the parts to Mr. Troutbend in Las Vegas in case he would recognize the solution to my problem.

This is everything that was left on the shelf after I removed the likely candidates in case he would identify the key piece.

But he was no help. This afternoon I spent a lot of time looking at every single connector and sprinkler in our extensive collection, thinking maybe the missing piece was accidentally left attached to something the last time we used it.

Finally, clear on the other side of the garage, behind the tractor I found a shelf with some more air compressor stuff on it, and there was a piece that came closer to what we needed, but still wasn't quite it. I was able to assemble something that at least blew enough air into the system to drain the pump, but it still left something to be desired, so I will keep working on it tomorrow.

I know exactly what I need (or I think I do): a female/female fitting like the brass one in the photo that is attached to the gray plastic thing (next to that little orange handle upper right). It happens to be frozen on there, and if I can get it off, my troubles are over, but first I'm going to go to the hardware store and see if I can get one. The plastic already has marks on it where someone has tried to get it off, so it's probably more than I can get done by myself.

You need one of those thingies that plug in to the what may call its. Hope that helps.

So finally Mr. Tbend remembered that the part I need might be still hooked to the portable air compressor (we have two, one more portable than the other), and I had forgotten to look there too - an old age thing. Sure enough it is one of those thingies that plugs into the what you may call it, and I have it in my living room where I can admire the beautiful simplicity of it.

Thanks - it is so pretty here and I have been taking some photos, but they end up looking a lot like last year's photos taken at the same time of year.

Did you say a mild fallDid I missed this?

Have you had frost yet? It is still in the mid-70s here sometimes close to 80, and high 30s at night, sometimes in the 40s - 48 tonight. The leaves are changing so it's real pretty, but cold weather is not in sight.

The stream is still nice

Sounds like a good plan. Fewer parts means fewer to locate, fit together, and potentially "misplace".
comment by stiva on Sept 25, 2008 10:49 AM ()
After you get it all figured out, maybe take a picture of the correct set of pieces in the right order, so you'll know what you need next time

No help this year though

You bet I'm going to take a photo. I googled it, and it's a universal problem - most of the info said there is no set solution: a person has to string together a bunch of connections to get there. There is such a thing as a blowout plug for RVs but the threaded part is a female and it needs to be a male. It took me a long time to figure out why it is backwards but I finally got it. I might go ahead and get one because it would eliminate most of the 'parts.'

Sounds like Mr. Troutbend picked a good time to stay over in Vegas...

It drives him nuts - as bad as having rental property with things going wrong all the time. He'd rather do it himself than have me pestering him for answers. But when I finally get it solved and he's off the hook, he's happy to not be here, I'm sure.

You are a good woman Laura. Oddly enough, I was wondering yesterday if you used the river water. It is so beautiful there.

Yes, we own a share of the water rights. It's a good deal for us.

My solution to the whole thing would be to call a sprinkler guy. But I'm a city girl. I'm impressed that you are fixing things. The river looks beautiful. (What kind of camera are you using?)

It's a Sony (of my owny) camera. We have a hard time getting vendors to come up here from town. A couple of years ago I couldn't get one of the water heaters to drain and it was so frustrating.

The scenery is beautiful, but the parts are Greek to me.

It feels twice as hard because mechanical stuff doesn't come easy to me, and the whole time I'm at the workbench I'm wondering if in a million years it will ever be second-nature. Now, if it was baking a cake, no problem!
